The weekend of the England v Wales match, the Warriors 1st tour and the 1st 'Challenge' rugby match ever played in England.
A strong Colts side, supplemented by some senior players, gave the Warriors a very hot West country welcome. The tour was a definate success but it was hard work for the Welsh on the field. The home side dominated early phases and soon scored.
The Warriors, communicating in Welsh much of the time to fox their opponents, were grateful for the experience and bulk of Betws wing Wayne Comley who bulldozed over for a score. They were also boosted by the return of Edward Williams' brother Rob, now a Teignmouth resident and his friend Simon Westley. Westley made an impact 2nd half when he came on at half back and scored the Warriors final try. The ref's strict interpretation didn't help the Warriors and they didn't really look like winning the match at any point but impressed enough to earn respect. Spencer Williams came on to make his debut on the wing.
Edward Williams already chosen as tour Captain and was also named man of the match after a strong game.
The rest fo the tour went very well except that Wales lost. The Warriors though certainly did their best to compensate by almost levelling the clubhouse with a superb sing song led by Gary James but also featuring Chris Bonar's Welsh ballard, Stephen Walley serenading the bar maid, Rob Williams worst ever Cwm Rhondda and much more. Although not especially related to his on field performance it should be mentioned that Chris Bonar was later named Star of Tour.
There are more photos on the Warriors photo gallery blog . More off field details will also appear there unless blackmail money is not forthcoming!
