Llannon 28 Llanelli Warriors 35 (match 40)

Dai Newson gets the Shed treatment for the programme cover

report appeared in Evening Post, Carmarthen Journal & Llanelli Star

A disjointed match played at a very boggy Tumble, the Warriors gained a narrow victory. A fine welcome in the clubhouse afterwards was almost scuppered when Lewis Jones was caught nicking the Wales On Sunday and almost missing the bus home.

Warriors XV: Dai Spriggs, Colin Talcon, NO One, Dean Gilasbey, Lee Rowlands, Des Williams, Gwilym Lewis, Chris Bonar, Jason Jenkins, Mike Spriggs, John Horwood, Stephen Walley, Jonathan Bonar, NO One, Dai Newson (Cpt)

Tries: Dai Spriggs (2), Dean Gilasbey (2), Gwilym Lewis

Conversions: Dai Spriggs (5)

Man of the match: Dean Gilasbey

A late review found that Dai Spriggs had slotted all 5 conversions and not two as reported, while Llannon had been credited with an extra one. The revised result therefore 35-28. Dai's 19 points was a new match record whilst it was the second time the club had won 4 consecutive matches.

The horrible weather obviously didn't help player recruitmant for either side but once Jon Bonar had been sent home to get his kit the Warriors actually had a man advantage, 13-12.

The game itself may not have been of the highest quality but it did keep the crowd entertainned. Deano's red helmet and red cycle shorts combo only registered third on the silly costumes stakes, beaten by Walley's bermuda shorts and Louie's Long Johns. Half time entertainment was provided by Lee 'Hughie' Rowlands who had to have a quick 'chuck'. Chris Bonar, Jumpin' John and Colin Campese all had good runs although Chris went in the wrong direction for a bit. Under intense pressure at the end of the game Jon Bonar decided to pick up and go which led to a last frantic fight for the ball before victory was secured. Mind you referee decisions were pretty random with a football player helping out as the man in the middle.

After the match was like an episode of Japanese game show endurance for those who braved the trickle of icy water posing as a shower. there were some decidedly muddy Warriors in the clubhouse afterwards. Once some rather nift presentations were made with dai newson ending up with deano's man of the match tie we all settled down until Louie was caught trying to nick the Rugby Clubs Wales on Sunday and almost had to walk home. Thanks to Tumble RFC and Ken Bowen for organising the day.
