The 2nd meeting between the sides and even closer than the first match. Played the day after Wales had beaten england in the 6 Nations it's perhaps no suprise that skill levels weren't what the could have been but it was another good day for the club. Scott Quinell, who watched the match, donated items for the Cambrians after match raffle/auction which rasied money for the Warriors New Zealand tour.
The Warriors continued their unbeaten run but it couldn’t have got any closer. After the drama at the Millennium Stadium it was even closer at Stradey Park with a re take of the final conversion saving the Warriors skins. The Warriors were awarded a scrum on full time near the half way line. The ball was moved across the field twice, rucked back several times and eventually, with some of the players out on their feet fly half Jon Jones stretched over in the midst of a pile of bodies. Dai Spriggs was the man to take the conversion but slotted his original attempt wide. Cambrian celebrations were cut short though as the ref had spotted some leaning on the posts. Spriggs struck the re take sweetly and the game was drawn.
Despite the celebrations of the night before, the game was full on and played at a good tempo. The Warriors earned an early lead through a Simon Jenkins penalty but as the half progressed the Cambrian Pack brought their weight to bear on proceedings. Their heavy pack tended to win the collisions putting their backs on the front foot. Dew Thomas and Davies all had their moments for the Select and tries came at regular intervals through Wayne Phillips, Mark Cotterall, Les Jones and Jason Goose. The Warriors were indebted to the defence of Rowlands and Jenkins to keep the score down whilst the Selects lack of a kicker cost them dear.
In the second half the introduction of some fresh legs, including man of the match Jason Jenkins aided the Warrior athletes and their fitness also paid off. Whilst the Cambrian continued to threaten the Warriors got more into the game and eventually scored. Tony Whittaker slid over in one corner and opposite wing Alan Taylor won a chip and chase in the other. They were still behind though and the Cambrian kept pushing for a winning score. Last time the Warriors managed to win the game at the death but this time the Cambrian deserved at least a draw. The Warriors were very relived to escape with a draw and both sides had played a full part in a an excellent game.
The Warriors were even more pleased afterwards as a raffle and auction helped swell the coffers for their forthcoming New Zealand trip. Thanks to Scott Quinell who organised items for auction (and watched the game) and the Cambrain for their generosity.
