Programme cover: Colin Talcon presenting Penybanc Captain Adrian Pugh with the Warriors 7s trophy (2004/05 season)A very enjoyable day at Penybanc, well at least until the Ireland - Wales match and even then Billo and Gwil had the compensation of bagging both 1st (Mark Jones) and last (Peter Stringer) scorers to net themselves £30. The Warriors game was better though. Another good squad turn out although Killer and Big Al were still injured from the Gladiators match.
John Horwood became the 'most capped' Warrior on his 109th apperance, Meredith Pugh finally got to play for Penybanc and scored for both sides, Tarw got a hatrick in a 19 point haul, Roger got stuck ino some rucks and Mauls, Jason's throwing in was excellent, Tony went well with ball in hand, Oag went for a spin, Gwilym managed to pay back a few debuts from last time, Dobbin managed to send off Anthony his son.
After the game Chris kept buying beer despite running out of money and had to be rescued by local women (and later we rescued them from him!). The whole bus popped into Cefneithin to drop him off and 'treated' the locals to a couple of hakas and the usual 'yellow submarine' before we were allowed home. Good day all round then!
Match report
The Warriors another fine performance to triumph in Penybanc. With both sides coming off the back of tense victories it was a chance to relax and play some rugby. This resulted in an exhibition nature to the game with the result secondary.
The Llanelli side are in fine form at the moment with their systems working well whilst Penybanc used the opportunity to experiment with selection.
This meant that the Warriors were the more cohesive side and started stronger. Prop Colin Talcon, wing Meredith Pugh and No8 Simon Jenkins all scored from well rehearsed moves. Jenkins was proving a real handful for the Penybanc defence and added another try in a fine display of explosive running.
Penybanc were also enjoying the occasion and scored a neat try when Christian Hughes broke clear and scored near the posts. Both the Harris and Tench brothers were doing well for the home side and Mathew Ladd was at the heart of most of their good work.
Both sides played expansive rugby and with the conditions perfect there was plenty of skill on show. Shortly before the half Penybanc clawed back another try when David Morris twisted his way through.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first. The Warriors extended their lead with breakaway tries from Dean Gilasbey and Andrew John but Penybanc were unlucky on a number of occasions. The Warriors seemed to be getting the bounce of the ball and a couple of referee decisions also helped their cause. Meredith Pugh swapped sides to appear for his home village and had an immediate impact bustling over for a try which was converted by Richard Evans.
Justin Bennett went close a couple of times for the Warriors whilst Craig Oag whirled around the field. The final score though, went to Simon Jenkins who claimed a hatrick after been held up once. He also banged over two conversions to complete a man of the match performance. The team were indebted to line out specialist John Horwood who was setting a new appearance record for the club in his 109th game. His work in the set piece complemented his second row partner Roger Thomas who was a major force in the loose. It was their work that laid the foundations for the victory and the Warriors will be a hard team to beat whilst they play so effectively.
