The third in the Gwlad series and a third cracking invasion of the capital by the Warriors hordes. Hordes of supporters anyway as several late withdrawals leaves the team with a reasonable 18 players but a bit short on pace and cutting edge.

The build up to the Warriors 170th fixture saw unprecedented interest on opponent’s web site with posts on the subject of the game well up. That was superseded by 1st a mention on Scrum V (red button fan zone, Rick O’Shea) and then thanks to Tace Shambles on scum V website a visit from Phil Steele for Radio Scrum V’s Club call. A Tuesday night interview in the Cambrian was broadcast on the Thursday and later went worldwide as part of the podcast.

As ever the more complicated the fixture the more stressed the management and the computers and phones of Neil, Lee and Gwilym fairly buzzed as supporters joined and players dropped out. In the end the only hitch was a rushed pick up of red rather than blue kit and fears it might clash with Gwla@d’s pink strip.

And so the Warriors biggest trip to date (outside of tour) saw a 50+ seater heading up the motorway, A very quiet stag do and some very loud Warriorettes all aboard saftley. Unfortunatley they were also encouraging Big Al and Neil to indulge in Stella. Lee’s on bus entertainment of 1st to score and raffle which took up to Pencoed to sort. Big Rhydian was the 1st winner, claiming an Easter egg.

At the ground only slightly late the 1st thing to do is make sure Gareth ‘Scottish Trip’ Cocoran is there for his 3rd game for the Warriors and his 1st match for anyone for 18 months. Having secured his services, handed the Captaincy reigns to Rich Hapus as Simon isn’t available.

The match itself is easily told. Gwl@d dominated possession and hammered away at the Warriors line. The Warriors work on defence was paying off and the reds defence helped by some poor passing held firm for about 20 minutes before Bender went over.
Just as the Warriors re-gathered themselves for the kick off half the Gw@ld team was replaced and banks of pink shirted players swopped throughout the game. Never the less the Warriors did well and only conceded another try before the break. Unfortunately the had little chance to attack although prop Paul Davies made an impressive break up the wing.

The game continued in much the same vein with Kevin Khuana again Gwl@d’s most potent threat, sweeping in for 3 tries in the last quarter as the Warriors ran out of steam. To be fair t the Llanelli side it was a draining efforts and injuries meant that they had to borrow Gareth Bambsy from the home ranks. The defensive effort was huge though with Rhydian having his best game indefence and Darren Pollitt being named Man of the Match for his efforts. A mention for Eric Horridge, the hooker filled in well as wing/full back despite having played for Betws against French tourists XV De Erdre the night before. Big Al had bit of the day with a massive bounce as the Warriors went close and Jon Kerr sort of made a tackle - even if it was 5 meters behind his try line. Rich Evans did well as Captain in difficult circumstances and the team emerged with plenty of credit.

After the match it was a traipse (possibly via the halfway pub, some Gwl@d nibbles in the car park and some French oysters and wine) to the Bowls Club, home of Clwb Rygbi Caerdydd and more food; pies, pasties, welsh cakes and chocolate brownies. Suitably refuelled it was another jaunt, back towards town this time with a top sing song on a rather bemused service bus.

Into the Philly for drinking, dancing and Wales winning over Ireland – the victory possibly all the sweeter as the try was controversial. Some top dancing them ensured with Sharon, Colin and even Big Al deserving mentions but all trailing the awesome Jason Jenkins who having dominated the pole then proceeded to hassle every hen party he could find.

Amazingly everyone found the bus home (I think), some more singing (yellow submarine – natch) and back to the Cambrian where there was a ….. Karaoke on!

The hardcore made the crawl up to the Met bar in town to round off some 16 hours of rugby & drinking although there was little sign of the competing Parker and Al.

Just in case you think this was all for fun several hundred pounds was raised for the running of the Gwlad website and the Reuben & Friends charity.

Tumble Development XV 20 Llanelli Warriors 34 (Match Report 169)

Warriors survive comeback in Tumble

Some impressive attacking but poor defense from both sides but the Warriors hold on.

The Warriors managed to triumph in an exciting match at Gwendraeth overcoming a talented but wasteful Tumble Development side.
Tumble fielded a young side giving youth an opportunity whilst the Warriors, although missing some key players welcomed back veteran hooker Jason Jenkins.
Right from the off Tumble demonstrated both their desire to spread the ball but also a lack of discipline, a loose pass was picked up by sharp Warriors 9 Mathew Jones and he strode away to score.
The Warriors built on this fortuitous start; the dangerous running of Smith and Jamie Evans complimented by some hard graft from Darren Pollitt and Rhydian Williams. Evans first set up namesake Richard and then stepped through himself to help the Warriors to a substantial lead before Tumble got off the mark with a long range effort.
Simon Jenkins drove over from close range for the Warriors but the try of the half though came through their wing Jon Kerr who stepped through a gap on half way and streaked home.
29 - 5 up at half time the Warriors were guilty of relaxing in the 2nd period. Tumble began to spin the ball but a too casual attitude saw too many forward and dropped passes. The did begin to score though and three unanswered tries ate into the Warriors lead. The visitors last ditch tackling helped them keep their noses in front but it got tighter and tighter as the minutes ticked away.
The Warriors were able to up their game and the closing minutes saw a ding dong battle with play sweeping from end to end. Tumble weren't quite able to get the score they needed to put the game back in the melting pot and with the last action of the game Mike Seignot wriggled over in the corner for the Warriors to secure victory.

After last weeks bruising encounter with the Bumble Barbarians this was a totally different experience for the Warriors.

Two relaxed teams looking to spin the ball produced a try fest of free flowing rugby with all players looking to express themselves. The Warriors did kick an early penalty but after that foot was rarely put to ball which was thrown about like a hot coal.
Not surprisingly in such a game it was the wings who benefited most. Jonney Corner (Warriors) and Aled Arnold (Penybanc) monopolised the early scores getting two tries a piece. Hot stepping center Jordan Smith extended the Warriors lead but strong running Cellan Harris hit back for the Tigers. Penybanc were left to rue missed kicks whilst the Warriors through Simon jenkins (2) and Richard Evans improved every score.
If sharing 6 tries in the first half was impressive there were 9 in the second. The pace of the game resulted in plenty of tired legs which didn't help defenses and so the tries came at regular intervals.
Arnold completed an impressive hatrick for the home team and Mario D’Angelo scorched in on the other flank. However Smith got his second and then Hancock got two for the Warriors. John James finished off a sweeping move for Penybanc and a second Lindsy Stamp conversion kept their hopes alive.
The Warriors swept back up field though, Simon Jenkins managed to score from an ambitious chip and chase before Gwilym Lewis got their 8th try to seal the game. Remarkably despite using several kickers the Warriors 100% conversion record held with Jon Kerr (2), Jenkins, Rhydian Williams and Smith all landing kicks.
Penybanc had the final word when veteran Steve Bear seized on a loose ball to sprint over from long range, his conversion bringing the final whistle.
An entertaining game of rugby, despite all the try scorers Warriors hooker Richard Evans was named Man of the Match for a non stop performance edging out the impressive Jon Kerr and strong running of Rhydian Williams whilst Penybanc were lucky to have players with the intelligence of Mike Howells on the field.
To round off a great day for the Warriors Penybanc made a donation to the club to support players with learning difficulties.

Warriors edge out brave Bradford & Bingley.

The Warriors proved a rarity over the weekend when they overcome their English visitors in an enthralling encounter at Parc y Scarlets.

Fired up with national anthems both sides provided a passionate performance with the result in the balance to the end.
The Warriors started strongly and dominated early territory. The forwards got the team on the front foot and allowed their backs to get into the game early. The good work was undone though when the ball was spilt in the tackle and Ben Hall caught the Warriors cold to sprint away for a try from nowhere. Despite being stunned the Llanelli side picked up where they left off with Lee Rowlands running strongly in centre and again the forwards going well. Bumbles defence though held strong and it was déjà vu as a loose ball allowed the Bumbles to streak away and despite a rearguard action they held their composure and grounded a second try through George Morris.
Obviously shaken by this stunning turn of events it took some deep resolve for the Warriors not to panic but they stuck to their game plan and worked their way up field. Three times for a Welshman, the third score of the game went to Jason Bennett, powering over after good approach work with a trademark burst.
Captain Jenkins slotted the conversion and a penalty and it was the Bradford teams turn to wonder what had happened with their lead evaporated.
10 all at half time the pace of the game continued, it was a tight affair with plenty of tension and lots of excellent hard rugby. The Yorkshire side had plenty of grunt up front with Anthony Yorke and Lee Hainsworth going strong, Ryan Kirby was a thorn in the Warriors side and Ashan Sakandar put in some big hits. The Warriors struggled to contain them at times and Richard Evans and Darren Pollitt lead the way in putting their bodies on the line.
Jamie Evans and Jordan Smith were busy in the Warriors back line but strong tackling nullified much of their efforts. The Warriors took the lead through an unorthodox score, they broke through mid field, rucked well and broke right, Mathew Kirkham almost put Josh Crowther over but Bumbles snaffled the ball back, but under pressure they couldn’t clear, a three man collision with the post saw the ball spill loose and Curtis Ramcke pounced for the score which Jon Kerr converted.
The Bumbles side wasn’t finished though and with the wind in their favour they were easily able to get into Warriors territory. The broken running was a feature of an exciting match and they managed to steak away and Nick Starkey touched down. Kirby kicked the extras and it was all square with 10 minutes to go. Back to the Warriors, a drive almost got the score they needed as the clock ran down and time dipped under 5 minutes left they were camped on the English line. A third scrum saw the ball moved twice and eventually Bumbles ran out of defenders and Ramcke crossed for his 2nd. The windy conditions scuppered Jenkins conversion leaving 3 minutes with all to play for. It was desperate stuff from both sides but a hack ahead put the Bumbles on the Warriors line. Drive after drive was held up and eventually the Warriors got hold of the ball and cleared, back came Bumbles but the spirit of the game was exemplified by Crowther holding onto Cookson for dear life until the cavalry arrived. A late penalty with a minute to go kept the Welsh team nervous but they won a scrum and with the last play of the game managed to clear to touch. The final whistle brought pain and ecstasy to the opposing teams as both had given their all in a fast hard match. A true sporting occasion with a winner and loser but no charity or tokenism, although both sides had players with learning difficulties it was a quality match to saviour for the standard of rugby played. The Bumbles – England’s only integrated team can be proud of their performance in only their 4th game whilst the Warriors were proud winners on a great international occasion.

Betws 17 Llanelli Warriors 31 (Match report 166)

The Warriors FINALLY got the season underway with what is now their oldest running fixture - Betws RFC. It was already time for the November internationals but on a bright sunny winters day and after several cancelled fixtures the Warriors headed for Betws. It was quite a convoy with the bus followed at intervals by Killers Kar of supporters, an always late gwilym and Kwan Kar with his supporters. Just when it seemed the club had a team together (which was better than Betws were managing at that point) the Edmunds car turned up with 3 more players.

So after a long wait there was a decent crowd and plenty of players all ready to see the Warriors rock out. The Match report:

The Llanelli Warriors opened their season with an impressive win at Heol Felin. One of their oldest fixtures the Warriors enjoyed a warm welcome off field in Betws but a good hard match on it.
The Warriors were boosted by a strong turn out for their 1st match with Smith, Bradbourne and Cornermaking debuts. Betws though took the opportunity to experiment with their line up with Rewston returning to scrum half and Ian Davies moving to second row a quick example of this. A good attitude and conditions also helped facilitate an open game with enjoyment obviously as important as winning.
There were plenty of notable performers for both sides; Alex Kwan’ s strong running from full back was a feature of the Warriors play whilst Captain Trevor Morris spearheaded much of Betws efforts from centre.
The open nature of the match was illustrated by the fact that most of the scores came from out wide. Chris Morton and Gareth Lewis got one apiece on the Betws flank but were outdone by Warriors’ man of the match John Corner who scorched away for a brace and although Darren Pollitt on the other Warriors wing didn’t get on the score sheet he was heavily involved with some impressive running.
Not that there wasn’t plenty of effort up front as well with Mathew Rees dominating the line out for Betws whilst Nathan Lawson and Will Brown got around the field effectively for the Warriors. In such a even game opportunities needed to be taken and Betws bombed several certain chances with Mark Thomas and Trevor Morris especially gulity. Added to this only Cellan Davies was successful with a touch line conversion leaving at least 18 points unclaimed.
A Jamie Evans try for the Warriors matched a third Betws effort as the game entered the final quarter and then Alun Stephens exploded off a scrum to give the Warriors the lead with just minutes to go. Betws launched some desperate attacks from deep in their own half and this allowed Kwan to intercept and stroll over to safeguard the result. Simon Jenkins added his 4th conversion to go along with an earlier try and captain his side to this opening win.

No mention in the official match of Gwilym being given a clear run to the line by Kwan only for Cellan to hit the afterburners and make sure Gwil didn't score against his 'regular' side. Whether this was mainly to stop Gwil himself or because Betws players had agreed a £5 fine for players who let Gwilym score is unclear. The Warriors played pretty well with Darren Pollitt doing well on his wing and Simon throwing well at line outs. Will showed he was still getting used to the difference between rugby and American football with some of his passing whilst Hapus and Porridge showed their loyalty by playing for both sides. Clever Trevster led the Betws challenge Captaining from center and seemed to overcome the trauma of his last match against the Warriors some 10 years ago when playing opposite Chris Bonar he broke his foot at Stradey park and had to walk to A&E.

After the game a very packed clubhouse enjoyed Wales giving the impression they would smash South Africa before not enjoying wales reminding us that they are currently very good at blowing games. Gwilym had already got some chopsing in to Deano but he had the last laugh as Wales let it slide. Chris Edmunds almost got some compensation with his bet that george Gog would score three tries on his debut but again it wasn't quite to be.

Anyway the lovely Tracey turned up to whisk the Warriors off into the night with a fine win under their belts.

Llanelli Ambulance Service 24 Llanelli Warriors 41 (Match 165)

Another good day back at New Dock as the Warriors notch a 40 point win

Despite the long season the Llanelli Warriors proved they still had plenty of running in them as they beat Llanelli Ambulance in a high paced encounter at New Dock Stars.

As ever the firm ground helped the Warriors cause although the heat played a big part especially in the latter stages. In the rather cautious early stages both sides looked a bit reluctant to show their hand but the game did slowly come to life. The ambulance edged the early encounters and demonstrated some good skills whilst launching several attacks.

They looked odds on to score when Richard Evans broke clear only to be denied by an excellent Ryan Morgan tackle. The Ambulance side continued to press and eventually took the lead with a well taken try through Jones. The Warriors began to come more into the game after this, Rhydian Williams providing a big presence and Jason Jenkins going well. As in several recent matches the Warriors’ Achilles heel was their rucking with forwards not getting over the ball effectively. The Warriors where helped enormously when Robert Davies was forced to leave the field as he had benefited from their poor rucking the most.

If that was their weakness then their strength was full tilt attack. Quick offloads, fast hands and pace out wide meant that if they did win ball they were inevitably dangerous. Wing Curtis Ramcke again showed he needed only half a chance as he crossed to get the Warriors of the mark and flanker Nathan Lawson ensured they led going into the break with a strong run.

The second half saw the teams start off going try for try, scores for the Warriors through Pollitt and Randall quickly being cancelled out. Randall scored again to re-establish a 10 point lead at 29-19 but as the heat took it’s toll the Warriors finally pulled away. Effective centre Jamie Evans won a long race before replacement centre Neil parker stormed through the middle. Simon Jenkins 3rd conversion saw the Warriors past 40 points but the Ambulance team had the last word. Father and son duo Luke and Cam Messaggiero ran hard throughout whilst scrum half Scipee was often a handful. They saw some reward for their hard work as the Ambulance team crossed at the death for a well deserved consolation score.

Warriors full back Andrew John was later named Man of the Match ahead of several candidates to round off a very enjoyable day of rugby.

MORE hot sunshine. MORE debuts and another win. A good day at New Dock again for the Warriors.

Despite some almost non existent running the Warriors managed to pull off a win here, helped by a strong local turn out and the Ambulance needing a couple of loans. This almost back fired on the Warriors when Rich Hapus broke clear in the 22 but young Ryan Morgan, playing only his 2nd ever game of rugby managed to pull off the cover tackle. More comic moments were to be had, especially in the 2nd half with father and som Message-aeros Cam and Luke back chatting and falling into each other, Cam also geting a Simon special from behind just when he thought he was in the clear. Big Rhyd added to jis 1st cap with his 1st injury (baddy finger) Apart from that he spent half the game going the wrong way and the other half apologising to Gwilym for going the wrong way.

Neil Parker was able to move away from ref and in his 2nd game and with his 1st touch he split the defence for a crucial try. Good to see Gary Shed back as ref - keeping an eye on young nephew Jamie.

There was the disapointing spectacle of Wales v South Africa in New Dock Clubhouse afterwards although some Warriorettes did finally arrive (Hi Haley, Leslie, Carol Bach & Tracey). Thanks to New Dock for (just in time) getting the field ready.

Tumble 34 Llanelli Warriors 43 (Match 164)

No weddings to worry about this week and the re scheduled Tumble match was a big success for the Warriors.

A fine day and (eventually) a good turn out was topped off with a good win. There were some impressive debuts with Ryan Morgan and the 2 for 1 Ashleys: HellYeah and Hughes.

MATCH REPORT

The Warriors managed an impressive victory at Tumble with a great display of positive rugby.

Excellent conditions at Parc Mawr were conducive to running rugby and both sides were happy to oblige.

It was high tempo rugby from start to finish and the scores came thick and fast. The inital score looked unlikely when the Warriors chipped ahead but a series of handling errors allowed Jonathan Kerr to pounce for a poachers try. The score gave the Warriors confidence though and the dominated most of the opening quarter. Nathan Lawson got the 1st of a brace of tries as the Warriors support running and offloading began to find some gaps. Chris Edmunds crossed for his 1st Warriors try but Tumble proved they could be dangerous and hit back from long range and shortly added a second. This set the pattern for the game with tit for tat scoring, but Tumble couldn’t quite pull back that early Warriors lead.

The Warriors ended the half strongly and should have scored again but drastic Tumble defence held firm.

This seemed to inspire the Magpies who came out strongly after the break and probably had the best of the second half. They couldn't catch the Warriors though. Ryan Morgan capped a fine debut with a try and joining him on the score sheet were Curtis Ramcke and Simon Jenkins.

Adam Benikaritis led the way for the home side with two tries and a conversion with Shaun farmer, James Owen and Emyr Davies all crossing. The latter was a sweeping length of field movement which emphasised the high skill level that had been on shoe. It was difficult to single out individuals from such consummate team performances and the Warriors much have been please with how all three of their debutants went. Jamie Evans was the most dangerous back on the field but Warriors No8 Rob Hughes was eventually chosen as Man of the Match.

Cefneithin 10 Llanelli Warriors 30 (Match 163)

Cefneithin had a massive bachelors this weekend so with 50 boys missing there was some worry that this fixture wouldn't match previous occasions - HA!

The Warriors had probaly their best turn out this season player wise with the big news that cult hero Gareth McKibbon was back on the team.
It was credit o the Cefneithin grounds staff that Cae carwyn was in playable conditions and so it was ON with the game:-

MATCH REPORT (official version)

The Warriors maintained their excellent record in their annual fixture at Cefneithin, retaining the anniversary cup but it was a more terse and combatitive encounter than usual, not aided by the poor conditions.
Usually a feast of running rugby this was a more dour affair with half the points total this fixture usually produces. That’s not to say it was poor quality rugby, just that both teams sensibly reigned in their ambitions to better deal with the wet weather. In fact with the Warriors only having lost once this term and both Cefneithin’s teams heading their leagues it was no surprise that the rugby was often scintillating.
Both packs got stuck into each other with relish, Warriors flanker Kwan standing out whilst the gnarly home pack made sure it wasn’t a contest for the faint hearted. It was no surprise then that the deadlock was broken after the referee caught and carded Cefn’s Dai Lewis for a punch. In such a tight game there was no way that a weakness like that could be held and Warriors wingers Pollitt and Ramcke showed excellent finishing skills to set the Warriors on their way. The only people to rival their running over the sodden grounds were Warriors props Bennett (until a hamstring went) and Mckibbon whose entertaining running saw him named Man of the Match.
Bennett made a try for Simon Jenkins and the Warriors first half scoring was completed by Gilasbey at fly half. It was scant reward for Cefneithin who found themselves well behind in what seemed a tight contest although the Davies twins Scott and Sion impressed with the latter scoring a well taken try.
The second half was a an even more even affair, not least in the discipline stacks where Dafydd Bonar (Cefneithin) and Gwilym Lewis (Warriors) both received yellows. At least Dafydd, the latest of the Bonar dynasty, had the satisfaction of scoring a try on his return. Unfortunately for both him and the home team it wasn’t enough. With an irrepressible Jon Kerr having a stand out game for the Warriors and frustrating the Cefneithin several times, scores from Josh Crowther and Mathew Jones (on the final whistle) were enough to see the Warriors home (if not dry).
Afterwards Cefneithin again demonstrated their ongoing support of the Warriors team with £500 raised. Both clubs would like to thank all concerned for their magnificent support.

EXTRA INFO: a real wet weather match with big puddles of ICE cold water made this a real fun game to play in. Gareth Pies McKibbon started off as he contiuned by being 20 yards behind the pre match photo. Bloc did his rampaging buffalo impression with two awesome runs, the 1st should have resulted in a try, it featured a magnificent side step (from an opponent - out of the way) and if he hadn't managed to find the ONLY dry spot on Cae Carwyn he would have scored and ploughed a huge farrow in one go, never mind poacher Jenkins went over for him - before fluffing the conversion. Bloc's 2nd run was even better, ending in a comedy full stop when his hamstring went ("it happens to runners like me and Paula Ratcliff all the time"). Gareth McK also had a great prop run which saw him all the way to the try line until the ball inexplicably squirted out of his hands.
Pollitt's try was the best effort - a real sprinters effort hugging the touchline all the way, Gilasbey's was the worst, going over from a distance Gwilym would have been ashamed of.
Kicking was no better, following Tarw's dismal effort were Killer, Charlie (the ref), Pretty Pollitt and Joshua 'Ness' Crowther.
Dai Juniors card for 'punching' Simon (nice one Lewi) was fair enough but Gwilym's seemed to be for doing his laces up and no one knows what Daf Bonar's was for. Lee Rowlands was also lucky not to go for tripping - Huw Flash.

Billo has the last word, not only scoring a late try but also having his birthday celebrated. In two NON gay incidents he suffered 'deep heat' burns on his 'cheeks' but had revenge on gwilym in the showers!!!

Finally off to the clubhouse and for once watch Wales playing for a full 80 minutes with Warriors favorite fly half named Seren y Gem. Then it was the usual crazy Cefneithin afternoon with (in no particular order) Raffle (Rowlands won), toliet breaks, Gareth McKibbon's thank you speech, Scotland spoiling Irelands triple crown, video highlights from last year, karoke (featuring amongst others; Jumpin' John on yellow submarine, Evie Rowlands (age 3 1/2), Tony Whittaker, Jon Killer and LEWI!!!), Huw Flashing, Pretty Pollitt getting lost and Simon jenkins disapearing 'outside' (again) with his chick.

Strop of the day was ....er....er....er....Billo when he almost lost his shorts in his birthday drag through the mud (well done Jonny Kerr, Lewi etc)

One of the best matches the Warriors have been involved in with plenty of end to end rugby, so before any further details here's the match report:

MATCH REPORT

The Llanelli Warriors managed to triumph in this hugely exciting encounter at New Dock Stars, just seeing off the challenge of the Carmarthenshire County Council XV with the final move of the game.
The match was set up to raise funds in the name of former Council employee Phil ‘Oggy’ Holding who passed away just over a year ago and as a sports fan He would surely have enjoyed the rugby on display. The game was end to end throughout with some quality interaction as both sides looked to move the ball.
The County side suffered an early blow when scrum half Neil Haddock limped off just before the 1st scrum and the Warriors capitalised as their opponents took a while to settle.
The Warriors mixed up their, attacks nicely with number 1 to 12 bludgeoning away and the utside backs providing the rapier. Curtis Ramcke on the wing constantly made huge ground and his run broke the deadlock when he made a try for Captain Simon Jenkins. Jamie Evans scored one himself and made another for Jon Kerr and a 4th try was scored, when again Ramcke made a break and nice interaction with flanker Gwilym Lewis saw Alex Kwan split the defence and race in for a try.
The Council team also attacked every time they could with Gilasbey sparking many moves. As the Council side settled with Darren King and Mike Jones to the fore they came more into the game and a try just before half time gave them a boost going into the interval even though they trailed 24-7.
The 2nd half was a more even affair with both sides sustaining long attacks. John Horwood set a new Warriors’ appearance record of 150 matches when he came on and helped shore up the set piece but the early momentum was with the Council. Warriors’ full back Delaney was kept busy with Council back rowers Edwards and Thomas initiating a lot of line breaks and rewards came when Will Brown strode over for a neat try. This was quickly followed by a scorching long range effort form Rob Hughes to really put the game back in the balance. Simon Jenkins got an important score for the Warriors after some good work from Messaggiero but the Council confirmed their come back when John Lewis drove over for a score. It was the Wales scenario of would there be enough time for the Carmarthenshire team to snatch it but with Talcon and Pollitt tackling hard the Warriors held firm and eventually got back up field, Pollitt went down just short but Luke Rees managed to wrestle his way over and make the game safe for the Warriors.
Both players and spectators enjoyed what had been an enthralling end to end contest and to cap an excellent day £180 was raised for the Oggy Trust Fund.

With it being a local game (New Dock Stars) there were plenty of Warriors available (where were you all for Cardiff!) even with the usual bibbers (Parker, Lee the Mole and Lee BaaBaa) just watching. Lucky as the Council needed a couple of players.
Neil Haddock's much hyped rugby debut lasted from kick off to 1st scrum (20 seconds) leaving the way clear for Deano Gilasbey to try and talk the arse of the Warriors team. A very enjoyable game both to play in and watch, the Warriors extra pace on the right wing paid dividens as Kwan, J Evans, Killer and Tarw all scored there in the 1st half. The second half with young pups Kwan and Ramcke having to rest hamstrings (whatever they are) was a more even affair notable for William Brown scroing his 1st try. Tackle of the day was certainly Simon Delaney's effort on Mark Thomas whilst nathan Lawson almost got skill of the day with an audatious chip n chase. No suprises that Killer won baby of the day with another strop/pwdi.

John Horwood made his 150th apperance for the Warriors as he continues to push the club record ever upwards. Some class lineout takes and even a bit of rucking proved he is still an assesst to the team.

After the match it was inside to a rammed New Dock to watch Wales 'play'. Followed by a very longgggg raffle with prizes ranging from lovley bottle of whiskey to a tin of red kidney beans. Thanks to Sue and Pauline for the raffle work. The £180 raised will go the the Phil 'Oggy' Trust fund who have previously donated to the Warriors and Help for Heroes.

Gwlad 27 Llanelli Warriors 10 (Match 161)

What a day!

With a 10:30pm kick off it was an early start and so our long day began at 8:00am at Town Hall.

A difficult time to start the whole; whose playing, whose paid, where's thingy, what time we back, wheres the bus picking us up from, etc
Warriorettes were out in force with Tracey Shambles, Sharon, Sue Pegs, Tori Pegs & Carol Bach being joined by Kirsty, Lauren and Gemma - the latter two not wearing enough clothes to cover Dai Newson's Belly. They along with various wimps/injured players/committee: Lewi, Nusiance, Lee Mole, Dean Chappers, Parker, Killer - meant we almost had more supporters than players (in fact when we met Michelle up in cardiff it was a 50/50 split)

Once the driver had finally been directed to the fields (think we might have actually left the city limits again at one point) we met up with the Bloc n Juice shuttle.
The chilly morning meant a good warm up was nessacary and once some very colourful team photos had been taken it was on with the game. the match report pretty much says it all really:

Funds were raised, beer was drunk, dances were danced, fun was had - but brfore all that rugby was played, here is the report...

The Warriors travelled to Cardiff to play Gwladrugby.com. The top Welsh rugby forum, staged the game as a fundraiser for Marie Currie Cancer Research but were especially pleased to take the Warriors unbeaten record in the process.
The Warriors suffered a number of late withdrawals but after a good warm up they looked ready for business. The 1st half was a fairly brutal affair as the packs battled for supremacy. Captain Darren Pollitt led the Warriors with enthusiasm but it was Gwlad who got the edge and ground down their opponents. The Warriors rucking was again found wanting and they suffered a number of turnovers at the breakdown.
Dominating possession they camped in the Warriors half and the score seemed inevitable. Fittingly it was their outstanding play and ex schools cap Harris who made the breakthrough, the scrum half powering over from close range.
The dominance continued for most of the half and it was only desperate tackling with the Warriors back row of Lawson, Hughes and Lewis outstanding, that thwarted several attacks. This kept the Warriors in the game as Gwlad scored just once more before the break.
The 2nd half was a more open affair which consequently suited the Warriors backs. Despite often having poor ball they always looked dangerous. Fly half Jon Jones pulled the strings and centres Pegler and Jones consistently made inroads.
Although Gwlad scored next Pegler scored a long range effort to put the game back in the balance.
With Oliver prominent, two more Gwlad tries ended Warriors’ resistance as the game’s pace continued to be fast and furious. Quarterly and Thomond enjoyed their contest up front, Robbins scored with a trade mark burst whilst Donnelly not only scored a jinking solo effort but also slotted the only Gwlad conversion. The Warriors relied on the tackling of Ramcke and Talcon to stem the tide and the team got just reward when Jones streaked away for a try in the corner as the clock expired.

Despite the result it was a great experience for the Warriors to travel to Cardiff and help raise funds for such a worthy cause.

The Warriors defensive effort was pretty outstanding and really Gwlad should have scored some more points, there was even a Dean's moment of controversy when Robbins claimed he had been pulled back after scoring. Having said that, in Billo, Pegs and Ramcke the Warriors probaly had the most dangerous runners on the pitch.
The days Lewi strop then occured after the game when he thought he had lost his coat but it was soon over to the Halfway (via a sarnie with Gwlad and an oyster with XV De Lerdre) to join the more scantily clad supporters (who hardly lasted 5 minutes on the side of the field despite their 'blanky') for the 1st of the days beers.

A 'quick' trek accross town ('Come on Lewi, Come on Colin') to city hall (very very posh) and some more beers, food, complaints about paying for food, more beer and then one of the worst Welsh performances and one of the greatest Welsh wins in recent memory.

Despite Boycezone and Cor Meibion Dyffryn Aman it was far to libary like for the Warriors so it was on to the Phillamonic where Sharon led the dancing (and falling) in front of the big screen while the rest of the pub tried to watch France smash Ireland. Inevitably the Warriors took over the dance floor but the stripping was too much and when Wayne wasn't quick enough to get his clothes back on out went the Warriors.

Never mind on to the next bar - Sue limping along after her fall - where Lewi had to vouch that Neil parker wasn't as drunk as he looked for him to be allowed in. Then it was back to the bus, via the Welsh team bus, finally got that lookalikie ffoto of Killer and Jonathan thomas, hassled Stevo and watched Lee get caught in the bus door whilst he shouted at Jamie Roberts. Billo then tried to jump on the 2nd team bus where Robin McBryde was hurling abuse at the Warriors because he thought it MUST be going to Tumble - how close we were to the Warriors joining Andy Powell on a drunken golf buggy drive to the services we will never know!!!

Finally we got to our own bus for a sing song and a sleep before droppng everyone saftley home in Llanelli. Time for committee hard lads Gwil & Lee to catch a quick one before food. Despite almost crying when he left a sarnie in the city hall Lee also left his kebab untouched and spent most of the night/morning being ill.

Betws 27 Llanelli Warriors 33 (Match 160)

The day started well when Lewi kicked off with quote of the day
Lee – so you’ve already had a pint then Lew
Lew – No! I’ve only had 2 halves
Went down from there tho. A petrol crisis saw the bus having to free wheel the hills of the Amman Valley (sorry Tim). Got to Betws and we just scrapped a XV thanks to Mike Minimi from Gwlad/Newport going back to get his kit but then Betws only managed 9 players so Rich hapus was despatched to Betws duty – somehow gaining the captaincy in the process.
Seth Jones was eventually prized away from the bar and looked resplendent in willies as he reffed the game with the same skill and knowledge as he plays it with.
As ever for Betws games Gwilym was given a hard time by Richie Griff & Cell in the Betws back row and Lee Rowlands played at 10 meaning he has now played 12 of the 13 positions in the team.
Big Al got injured 1st minute, Bloc followed although he did at least have the decency to score before hurting his toe, Lee also hurt his knee and so it was left to a small handful to carry on the good work. Jon Kerr edged Simon out for on field strop of the day, Rob Hughes led the playing and set a new record for all but missing a conversion. Darren Pretty Polly put in some excellent tackling and Nathan, Tony and Josh all did well in the backs. Jon Kerr developed a ‘if we’re defending I’m injured/if we might score I’m ok’ policy (due to a blister!!!), Will ‘Big Dadi’ Brown did well at hooker and even rucked sometimes while John Horwood ruled the line out.

Depleted Warriors hang on for victory

Despite both sides being ravaged by injuries and withdrawals both before and during the game Betws and the Llanelli Warriors served up a great appetiser for the game at Twickenham that followed.
Defying the boggy conditions underfoot both sides endeavoured to move the ball at every opportunity resulting in a fast game that left pulses racing.
The home side’s strength was its quick backline and they drew first blood when Mathew Rees went over but the Warriors forwards were in uncompromising mood and they came back when Jason Bennett went over for a score. Unfortunately Bennett injured his toe in the process and couldn’t continue. Betws hit back when good hands from Roberts and Underwood that saw veteran Mark Rewston score as the action moved from end to end. With Horwood and Talcon busy for the Warriors and Will Brown leading some effective rucking they made good yards up the field. Eventually Warriors outstanding No 8 Rob Hughes broke clear to score under the posts and quickly converted to give the Warriors a lead that held to the break.
Both sides had plenty of opportunity in the second half, Pollitt and Lawson put in some big hits for the Warriors and whilst Gwilym Lewis probably edged his scrum half battle with Owen Williams it was despite great pressure for Betws back row tear-aways; Cellan Davies and Richard Griffiths.
Losing the effective running of Alun Stephens and Lee Rowlands didn’t help the Warriors cause and Rhys Williams rammed home the Betws dominance of this period with a classy effort. Mathew Rees got a second try but let himself down with some poor options that should have resulted in team scores. Let off the hook the Warriors hit back, Mike Minimi made the hard yards before Tony Whittaker capped some strong running with a deserved try. A Jon Kerr conversion left the Warriors 7 points clear but a rash decision to go for a penalty when time was up turned disastrous when Betws stormed up field and Rees touched down under the posts.
Rees stepped up to take the conversion but in a personal performance which despite a hatrick could only best be described as mixed he fluffed the conversion leaving the Warriors to claim victory by the slightest of margins.

After the game there was some debate over the score. Betws & Seth had Warriors 29, Betws 27, Warriors claimed 33 points and Lewi had Warriors 33 Betws 12! Anyway we’re writing the history so we’ll go for OUR score. Joshua Crowther also scored a try and was named Man of the Match.

After match as well as the national disaster of Wales losing to e**land (who’d have thought it was illegal to kick e**lish people) The Warriors descended into a bit of Jeremy Kyle, just for the record I don’t care who is calling who names over which girlfriend and its not my job to tell you when food is on. Lewis put in for top strop but it was close with Kerr, Will and Simon all having a shot. Dion bach won kiss catch (LEWI!!!! called him a 'dirty old man') and eventually we all got through the wilds of Llanedi home safe to Llanelli!

The Warriors defended the Dai Spriggs memorial Cup against New Dock Stars on boxing day in a fine advert for the game of rugby.

Well touch rugby actually but what with one side of the field water logged and the other frozen there wasn't much choice. Even then the pitch had to be anrrowed but at least the game went ahead.

There were plenty of mistakes on both sides but also some good handling for the crowd to admire.

A late start to the season and a poor memory from the Warriors present.

Curtis had an awesome debut, Jon Kerr retained the Captaincy and the Warriors won, not being there that is about as much as I can gather. Block tells me the boys played well and Parker reckons they took it quite seriously. he also told me they went into a big lead, no, wait a minute, they scored 1st then we scored and ... then we kind of....pulled ahead of them a bit...I think (Cheers Neil)

Royal Marines Logistics 58 Llanelli Warriors 19 (Match 157)

'Thanks' to Neil Parker for this one! With the commandos based in Swansea they were looking to play a match or two to raise money for Help for Heroes and to get a bit of team bonding in. Whilst apparently a number of Swansea sides gibbed out of playing them, Neil fronted up and promised a fixture - we're not called Warriors for nothing.
It was a very long and hot Wednesday for the Warriors. First as many as possible met over in Parc y Scarlets where the very nice Rupert Moon had arranged for us to get some kit from the Scarlets following the Warriors being stolen.
With the kit then in boxes and carrier bags it was over to New Dock to meet the rest of the boys for the game. Initally it looked as though we might struggle in certain positions but at least we had Paker's faithfull promise to play a full game. As time went on more & more (and more) players turned up.... luckily Neil was happy to only play a few minutes.
Anyway a sarting XV was chosen and duly kicked off:

Match report

The Warriors was established 14 years ago to help give players with learning difficulties the chance to experience rugby and this was certainly an experience to remember.
Having started the evening by being presented with a new kit from the Scarlets the team crossed the road to New Dock to face a team from the Royal Marines.
Currently based in Swansea between tours the Marines were looking to raise money for ‘Help for Heroes’ and the Warriors were very happy to oblige. Containing a strong Fijian presence, it was no surprise to find they wanted to play running rugby and keep the large crowd very entertained.
A record number of 39 players turned up for the Warriors and at times they could have done with them all on the field as the Marines cut loose from the off.

There was no shirking from the Warriors though with; Darren Pollitt, Simon Delaney and Nathan Lawson all getting stuck in. They managed to frustrate the Marines with some strong tackling but eventually they got away for a try after some 15 minutes of almost non stop attack.
Both sides played a full part in the game and when they had the ball the Warriors were also happy to attack. Sion Bennett made an impressive debut at 10 and they looked to have the defence stretched on occasion but the Marines cover defending was excellent throughout. The Warriors found it hard to get on the front foot as they struggled at the breakdown against bigger opposition and consequently tended to have poor ball. David Carpenter and Martin Pegler made some nice runs but it was all against the run of play.
After a slow start the Marines scored at regular intervals. John Hudson led the way with a brace of tries while local boys Andy Thomas and Ian John finished sweeping movements. The handling and pace of the backs was a feature of the game with Josefa Lauvanua and Amani Navonu prominent. The Warriors managed a little respite when Matthew Kirkham scored just before half time.
In such an open game there was plenty of skill to admire from both sides although it was inevitably the attacking skills for the Marines such as Richard Rodgers and Veresia Valemei and the defensive qualities of Ricky Lelli and Robert Hughes for the Warriors. One sweeping Warriors move had the crowd on their feet as the ball went left and right through several phases, Roger Thomas showing good hands to keep in going and Jason Bennett running strongly, but frustratingly, having made some 60 yards they again conceded a turnover and the Marines quickly countered to score at the other end. Matt Drummond scored the Marines 10th try as the game entered the final quarter but the sportsmanship which prevailed throughout a tough game of rugby was evident when Eric Horridge and Harold Rounds swopped teams. Horrigde won some quality line out ball but Rounds made the bigger impact when he sieved through his team mates to score.
Simon Jenkins then had a personal golden spell for the Warriors, converting Rounds try, scoring himself with a strong run and converting that to secure the Warriors Man of the Match award.
The pace and quality of the game (played in scorching heat) was a testament to both sides but more importantly hundreds of pounds were raised for ‘Help for Heroes’ and it is hoped this will become an annual fixture.

It was a cracking match and which the (very)large crowd enjoyed. Some of the Marines didn't realise the nature of the Warriors team but even once they had it made very little difference. They paid the Warriors the compliment of going full out for the result and although the match was played in a good spirit it was pretty hard with some big hits going in. Liam Carpenter was on the end of a spectacular hit that had the crowd on its feet (especially those who had to move out of the way), and Darren 'Polly' took a kick ahead only to be engulfed in a sea of blue and green.

Just to round off the Commandos faced a New Dock XV the next day and there was plenty of Warriors interest. For the home team Juice, Rob Hughes and John West all featued whilst for the Mariens Harold Rounds was back in his usual colors and Gwilym managed to scav a game and join him. Unlike the Warriors game the weather was rough and the marines also struggled in the live scrums where they had very (very) inexprienced players. despite this they ran out convincing winners (I think) 34 - 12 which throws the Warriors result into a quite good light.

Jon Kerr misses a sitter of a penalty, Big Al runs into touch (twice), Gwil starts at scrum half and Warriors STILL win. Plenty of players, plenty of supporters, plenty of sunshine and even plenty of food plus a great game of rugby made for a fantastic 1st visit to Mynydd for the Warriors. It was so sunny everyone wore yellow.

Match Report

The Warriors managed to snatch a late victory at Mynydd y Garreg with the odd try in 13. Perhaps the sunshine put everyone in 7s mindset as the ball was spun wide at almost every opportunity resulting in an open high scoring game.
The home side were out of the blocks first with some incisive running seeing them cross in the corner early on. The Warriors looked a little unsettled at this point and Dean Roberts and Mathew Davies added further scores. As the visitors defence finally tightened up a little, they began to create their own chances and wing Josh Crowther slipped through a gap to open the Warriors’ account. The Warriors got a 2nd score the ball went loose from a Mynydd move and flanker Mathew Kirkham seized the ball for an opportunist try. Mynydd continued to hold the upper hand but the Warriros just held firm, Rowlands and Lawson even holding one try up over the line. Both sides scored again before half time with Craig Scott getting a try for the home team and Gwilym Lewis being driven over for the Warriors.
The teams turned round with the Warriors just a point behind despite Mynydd’s dominance. The second half saw more of the same with open, end to end rugby keeping everyone entertained. The Mynydd backs were guilty of getting ahead of themselves on occasion with several forward passes spoiling promising moves. Ian Gillard scored a cracking try for Mynydd and David Issac eventually got them further in front but Luke Messaggiero hit back with a brace for the Warriors.
Playing up the slope in the heat seemed to affect the Mynydd players and the Warriors started to look stronger as the game headed into the final quarter. Eric Horridge capped an all action performance with a neat try and with Tony Whittaker adding a conversion to the 3 Jon Kerr had already slotted it left the Warriors just two points behind. With time running out it looked as though they might have blown it when Captain Kerr missed a sitter of a penalty in front of the posts. Mynydd renewed their defensive efforts and looked to be holding firm for the victory until the Warriors delivered a sucker punch. As Mynydd took possession at a maul on their own line the ball ran loose to leave Gwilym Lewis with the simplest of touch downs to steal the win. Kerr made no mistake with the conversion and the Warriors were able to rebuff Mynydd last ditch attacks and seal victory. Josh Crowther was named Man of the Match ahead of Anthony Randall and Lee Rowlands.

A very quick match despite the heat the Warriors were probaly a bit lucky with the ref and definatley a bit luvky with Deano turning up to play scrum half. The Warriors line out was very interesting, especially once Jumpin' John went off (lottery numbers anyone?) but Big Al had Skill of the Day with his touch line run and collapse - much to Neil parkers delight.

Once the Match was over, there were still plenty of highlights. The best was definatley Joshua Crowther' birthday/Man of the Match yard of ale (is he still drinking it?), but there was Darren Pollitts dancing, John Horwood's food mountain, Pauline stropping about Mynydd pinching the Warriors' tour badge and Richard Evans in his beach wear (see fotos).

A BIG DIOLCH to Mynydd for putting on the game and a great BBQ at short notice and hopefully another fixture next season.

The Warriors recorded their 100th victory with this bank Holiday fixture. A cracking late afternoon match played in spring sunshine on Bynea RFC's excellent field.

Although there were a few suprising 'no shows' for the Warriors they were able to name a strong team. They welcomed back Andrew John and Lee Barber for rare apperances this season. Anthony Randall switched to fly half whilst William Brown made his debut.

Match Report

In the lovely bank holiday sunshine it was the Warriors who made the hay at Bynea as they overcame the combined force of Llanelli police and Dyfed Steel.
The excellent surface and the excellent weather made for an excellent game of open rugby with both sides giving the ball plenty of width. With neither side having played recently it took a while for the play to settle but there was a lot of quality rugby across the 80 minutes. The Warriors applied most of the early pressure and were rewarded with an early penalty. They had the edge in territory but the combined side looked dangerous from anywhere and had several long attacks which almost brought several tries. Full back Joshua Crowther was later named man of the match for his sterling work in frustrating these attacks but eventually Leigh Davies got over to put the combined team into the lead.
The game continued to swing back and fore with the lead changing several times. Anthony Randall (Warriors) and Leigh Davies (Combined team) completed hatricks whilst Jonathan Kerr ended with 21 points for the Warriors. His second try giving him most pleasure as he rounded his father on the way to the line. Steve Miller and Gareth Williams slotted conversions for the combined XV as over 70 points were scored.
For the combined XV Wayne Williams, Captain Mike Lloyd and Darren Morgan did well whilst Carpenter brothers Liam and David, wing Richard Evans and debutant prop Will Brown whose 1st action was a try saving tackle all made positive contributions for the Warriors.
The holiday crowd were kept entertained right until the end of the match when Randall completed a block busting hatrick to put the game safe and secure the club’s 100th victory (in 155 matches). Although obviously the combined team were disappointed to lose both teams were happy with their performances and with off field fundraising boosting the Warriors coffers it was positive outcomes all round. Both teams are already eagerly looking forward to next season in what is hoped will become an annual event.

There were plenty of positive Warriors contributions with Crowther lucky to be named man of the match in front of Lee Rowlands, Nathan Lawson, Richard Evans, Liam Carpenter, Anthony Randall, David Carpenter and Andrew John. Adrian Williams continuned his development with some nice touches. Randall throwing his 9stone about was agian good fun to watch whilst at the other end of the scale jason & Joshua's conversion attempts should soon be forgotten.

The support was again good with various Warriorettes present, some on their way out, some with the sprogs and it all made for a good atmosphere (until the Warriorettes couldn't decide where to go afterwards).

The after match was also a success with several £100 being raised for the Warriors. It got even better when Pauline won the main raffle prize, a signed Scarlets ball, and decided to re-raffle it for the Warriors. Thanks then to all the people who supported the Police/Dyfed Steel raffle.

Gwlad Regional Select 22 Llanelli Warriors 29 (Match 154)

What a cracking 6 Nations the Warriors have had this season, and what a cracking day in Cardiff. It certainly helped ease the pain of losing to Ireland.

Played on nice and early on the 6 nations Super Satuday as well as the Warriors game there was the Italy v France and e**land v Scotland matches to keep people occupied on the Cathedral Road pub crawl on the way into town.

For those not aware, the Gwlad XV was made up of members and friends of the Welsh rugby chat site gwladrugby.com They have been holding an annual fund raising match for several years, originaly amongst themselves split into City Slickers and Valley Commandos (for whom Warriors Mathew Jones, Gwilym Lewis and Rhydian Jones put in apperances). This season during the Autumn season they combined and played Magor RFC (who Billo put in another apperance for). This was their 2nd venture as a combined team. The team this time featured amongst it's enthusiastic amateur players Irish and American players and a former London Welsh prop. The gwlad site is generally recognised as the best informed chat site and is regularly used by the Welsh media with members including Rick O'Sea and Carolyn Hitt. It has over 5,000 members and is well worth a visit. A word of warning - it can take a while to 'get' the sense of humour and it is not the place for whimsical 'thinking out loud' unless you have the statistics and evidence to back it up. Lurking before posting is recommended.
Anyway - they made up today's opposition for the Warriors, a pretty unkown quantity even for themselves, the Warriors travelled to Cardiff's Llandaff feilds to take them on...

MATCH REPORT

Played in warm spring Cardiff sunshine that perfectly suited their running instincts, the Warriors were able to triumph in this entertaining fixture against Gwladrugby.com.
Although the Warrior have been unable to put out a settled line up this season they were able to field a strong side for only their 3rd ever visit to the Capital. The home side were also forced into a late reshuffle so both sides had several untried combinations.
The game maintained a quick pace throughout and although the Warriors started better they fell behind to two long range effort as the home team put together some sweeping moves. Kevin Robbins was the Gwald team’s main threat and they got tries through Drew and ex London Welsh scrum half Dan Red, neither of which they converted. This seemed to give the home team confidence and they came more into the game, roles were reversed and it was now the Warriors having to attack from distance. Richard Pegler finally got a score for the Warriors but when Gwlad scored a third try, a swerve, step and sprint from wing Donnelly, and things began to look ominous for the Llanelli side.
The packs enjoyed a good battle up front with John Horwood and Richard Evans doing well and Jon Kerr managed to urge his troops to new efforts. They got back in the game with a slightly fortuitous try when a mix up between Humphries and Thomas in the Gwlad backline allowed Parker to pounce on the loose ball as it rolled over the line. With Kerr improving it gave the Warriors hope for the second half.
Even when Gwlad got further ahead through a try and conversion from Robert Eirwg the Warriors seemed to sense they were still in the game. They hit back with a try from the top draw. The back row worked Jones into space from a scrum in their own 22 and using the support runners as foils he weaved his way to the try line. This score put the game truly back in the balance and a huge spring in the Warriors step. Darren Politt had a dancing run down the wing whilst flankers Williams and Lelli both did well. Burly centre Alun Stephens’ strong running made a try for mobile prop Colin Talcon which saw the Warriors finally go ahead. In such an open game both sides realised it was all to play for but it was the Warriors who literally got the bounce of the ball, a hack ahead looked to be safely in the hands of MacKenzie but it bobbled into the lap of on running Jones who just beat the cover to the line to secure the win for Llanelli.
For Gwlad, Dafydd Oliver didn’t deserve to be on the losing side and some of the forwards proved powerful around the field whilst the Warriors had Cross and Jenkins in good form.
With both sides and the referee being positive throughout it proved an excellent encounter which also raised monies for various rugby charities. The success of the fixture can be measured in that it has already been written into the fixtures list for next term as an integral part of the international weekend.

Additional match information: It all looked like it might go a bit pear shaped when Bloc recivied a Bigman hand to the chops and Roger got a decent hand off but with the world's coolest ref; Postie, immediatley calming things down, it soon developed into a free running romp of a game. Thats not to say there weren't any forward exchanges with John Horwood being pressured in the lineouts and loose play but to be fair he did well. Rich Evans came in off his wing to smash his 8 stones into a couple of rucks whilst linesman Lewi did his bit by threatening 6'5 Bigman. Pegler had a very impresive return to Warriors colours but alomst spoilt it by trying to come off early. Luckily Mam was on hand to envoke the family name and shame him into staying on. Adrian had a tidy 2nd apperance and even brought an extra player in Ricky Lelli who is so unfit he used to play f**tball with Bloc. Neil Parker managed to score again which isn't bad for someone whose 'back is totally f**ked' and 'can only stand on the wing'. Whilst it wasn't the most competitive of games the last of Bender's mistakes was so comical that Warriros coach Gwilym claimed "I wouldn't have beleived it if I hadn't played against Gwlad before."

Right - thats enough of the rugby. There was a decent pub crawl to be had - heading down towards the (pre booked) Model Inn. Sarnies 1st though, courtesy of the Donnellys and then, trying to catch up with the Gwlad contingent it was to The Halfway and then The Cayo Arms before jumping the queue to get to the Model.

Base camp established the day/evening/night slowly descended into the sort of chaos not seen since...er....Cefniethin...or Scotland. Some came, some went (and came back again) but the only constant seemed to be beer and dancing. The less said about the Welsh - Irish game the better but dancing seemed to ease the pain. Tracey Shambles had the cheek to say that some of it had scared her for life since she and Michelle were amongst the worst culprits. It must have been pretty bad as Neil Parker ended up being 'the sesnsible one' and (eventually) got everyone heading to the bus. Somehow everyone made it more or less on time (although some people thought they had lost other people already on the bus) and we headed for Turk town. With the singing on the bus keeping everyone awake (or kissing Lewi if you were Irish) only a brave few managed to make any headway into town. This weeks last Warriors standing: Parker, Newson, 2 Guns, Gwilym Lulu, Tracey Hallett & Lee Babara. At least we weren't barging ex Welsh Captains like the Gwald contingent!

Belive it or not, after all that both teams are enthusiastic to make it an annual venture.

Another year and another great day in Cefneithin. This year was the 10th anniversary and will be memorable for: having a wrestling style intro as we took the field, a number of debuts ("This is Adrian is it alright if he has a few minutes"), the return of the Warriorettes and Lynn Williams.

As ever it was Itlay v Wales, singing, dancing and a general lurve vibe (check the album here). Tony Rees was his usual self post match and was ably helped by Chris Bonar & Jason Jenkins. As ever there was some great fundraising and the news that there will be a Warriors cabinet to celebrate the 10th anniversary which will house the new cup that Cefnithin had commisioned.

Match report

The Warriors obviously enjoyed the warm spring sunshine at Cefneithin to cut loose and pass the 50 point mark for the 1st time this season. The popular fixture was celebrating it’s 10th anniversary and the home side had put up a cup which added to the sense of occasion.
For the Warriors, returning half back Dean Gilasbey made his 100th appearance for the club whilst at the other end of the scale there were debuts for Messaggiero, Lawson and Williams. Cefneithin’s side must have had one of the largest age ranges in the clubs history with the return of several old stagers alongside some of the older youth members.
The contrast from the Warriors last game in a frozen Edinburgh couldn’t have been more stark and they hit the ground running. Captain Jonathan Kerr showed an excellent appetite for work and his strong support play saw him grab a record equalling 4 tries within the 1st half an hour. Three conversions saw him set a new match points record of 26 and left the home team visibly stunned.
It set the order for the day and both sides switched on the exhibition mind set, keeping the ball alive at all costs although the defence of both teams might need some work.
With both teams playing with width there was a battle royal on the wings with Cefn duo Alan Taylor and Tony Whittaker going hammer and tongs with Liam Carpenter and Josh Crowther of the Warriors. Taylor, hatrick hero the week before, did eventually get through the Warriors defence only for Warriors full back Lee Rowlands to hammer him in one of the biggest tackles of the game. Crowther got on the score sheet for the Warriors but it was Liam Carpenter who was named man of the match for an excellent all round performance. Whittaker also looked dangerous on occasion and slotted 2 conversions.
Rob Hughes got the pick of the Warriors efforts with a great solo run from half way while Messaggiero, and Lawson got over on their debuts. Dancing prop Jason Bennett completed the Warriors try scoring. Messaggiero and Hughes also improved their efforts to give the Warriors their highest total in 4 years.
Cefn recovered well from their early set backs and eventually notched 8 tries of their own. Marcos led the way with two darting efforts, whilst Williams and Hollbroke finished sweeping moves. The biggest cheer of the day was for veteran Tony Rees who rolled back the years to show the youngsters how it’s done with a storming effort. Nothing could spoil the Warriors day though and the Llanelli side claimed the cup which will now become an annual prize.

It was nice to have Dean Gilasbey back at half back and the difference for the Warriors was obvious with play switching nicley around the field. The official review doesn't mention Alan Taylor's red card from Charlie for (again) fighting with Gwilym but he probaly had had enough by then anyway from Rowlands. Tony gets bite of the day for his fantastic reation to any teasing from the Warriors ranks whilst Liam had a great game on the wing and deserved his Man of the Match bottle of bubbly. With the Bonar family largley absent (see below) it fell to the Messaggiero's to provide the biggest crowd of the day with young Luke getting a try, conversion and almost a can of beer off Lee Rowlands all on his debut (Just don't tell anyone he's only 16!)

Finally there was a shadow over the day. Anthony Bonar who usually organises so much of the Warriors day at Cefn was with his family up in Cardiff visiting his brother Jonathan. They would not wished for this to spoil the day (and it didn't) but our thoughts were also with them.

Llanelli Warriors tour of Scotland

The Llanelli Warriors enjoyed a successful trip to Scotland recently, following the fortunes of the national team and playing their own match in Edinburgh.
The team who include players with learning difficulties took a 20 strong party north of the border including 5 young men who had never been on such an expedition before. These included tour Captain Joshua Crowther.
The icy conditions meant that the Warriors scheduled fixture against Edinburgh Northern was initially cancelled but the enthusiasm of the team meant that a game of touch rugby was held. Despite being generally unfamiliar with the format the team responded to the challenge and conditions well. They secured a 15 all draw with tries from Gwilym Lewis (2) and David Carpenter. Simon Jenkins was named Man of the Match. Once the after match presentations were out of the way, the clubhouse which was packed out with supporters from the Warriors, Betws and other local clubs treated their hosts to a tradition Welsh singsong. So enjoyable was the afternoon that the clubhouse was drunk close to dry with takings said to have sent up the club for the rest of the season.
On the Sunday the Warriors had a chance to have a look around the historic city before watching Wales claim an impressive victory over Scotland.
Tour Captain Crowther said “It’s all been a great experience; we’ve made loads of new friends and taken the concept of integrated rugby back up to Scotland.” Another first time tourist, Darren Pollitt said “I never thought I would have the chance to do something like this but it has been a fantastic trip”
Club secretary Gwilym Lewis said, “This is what the Warriors and rugby are all about. The boys were fantastic in representing their club and their town. It’s given them a lot of confidence to come up here and play rugby, well away from any comfort zones. I’m not sure any of us will be quite the same again.”
The Warriors will be looking forward to their next match – the 10th anniversary of their fixtures with Cefneithin on March 24th.

The game

It seems a bit daft to have a proper match report for a game of touch rugby but seeing as we are going to count it as a match (well we didn't loose so...) here are some general recollections.
On turning up the Warriors were told in pretty uncertain terms that there would be no game – not even touch as the ground was solid under a small layers of sludge. The Warriors (used to playing touch on concrete) immediately set their tactics to work. Those with the longest faces and most doleful looking (Simon & Rich) were sent out to the pitch inspection whilst Neil and Gwilym (using passed experience) started drinking. These tactics soon paid dividends with the Northern Gents team announcing we would have some sort of game and hurriedly phoning a team.
With the home team a bit short of numbers the Warriors lent a number of players with Richard Evans, John Horwood, Huw Jenkins and Colin Talcon all adding Edinburgh Northern to their rugby cv’s.
Once the game was under way the Warriors did pretty well despite their unfamiliarity with this version of the game.
Initially it was the more experienced players who made up the running; Gwilym playing scrum half feeding Dean Chapman, Big Alun Stephens, Lee Rowlands, Simon and Neil Parker. With the whole team working hard in defence the game was scoreless for the 1st quarter. Eventually Big Al and Gwilym worked their way up the flank and when the pint handed ref failed to call a possible forward pass Gwilym was able to open the scoring.
As the team got used to the game (fast) and the conditions (cold) so it settled down. Edinburgh scored a couple of tries but with the Warriors by now sharing the ball carrying duties they held their own. Eventually David Carpenter got a neat try for the visitors.
The second half saw the Warriors disrupted somewhat. Neil was forced to leave the field after leaving his breakfast on the pitch whilst Lee Rowlands took to playing in the keeper position (the football pitch confused me). What with Gwilym noticeably tiring (much to the delight of a growing crowd of supporters containing a rather hooligan element from Betws RFC) other Warriors stepped up to the mark. Captain Josh Crowther had a busy game whilst the Carpenter twins, Jason 2 Guns, Darren Petticoat and Talcon all did well.
A crucial missed tackle from Gwilym saw the Northern go back in the lead but as the game headed towards a climax he made some amends banging the ball down for a short range try.
The Warriors were pressing again and were also aided when Huw was forced to rejoin the game. Unfortunately just as Warriors legend Chris Bonar got back onto the field the game was disrupted by an idiot, sorry irate football official who didn’t take kindly to the use of his field for (TOUCH) rugby. With time almost up it was decided to abandon the game with the scores standing a 3 tries apiece.

A cracking day at New Dock in lovely winter sunshine and some silverware - The Dai Spriggs Cup.

Nice to see a few returning players, ensuring a good squad on the day despite family commitments effecting the team. 1 foto so far so if anyone has any - please send them in via the web site (you have to join 1st mind ;) )

Warriors’ ride luck to secure cup.

The Llanelli Warriors managed to defend the Dai Spriggs Cup in an exciting Boxing Day clash against New Dock Stars. The teams shared 8 tries and it took a couple of kicks and the bounce of the ball to settle the game.
It was a typical Christmas game with a relaxed atmosphere and a willingness on both sides to attack and run with the ball. Christmas commitments also affected the line up of both teams with some unusual selections and rare appearances. For the Warriors Jamie Evans made a second appearance whilst flanker Lee Barber was pressed into duty at centre. Both sides introduced new scrum halfs and both made try scoring debuts with honours even in an intriguing duel.
In fact it was young Jason Baxter who scored the try of the games for New Dock. Backs and forwards combined well to out flank the Warriors defence and several phases of quick ball and good inter passing saw Baxter outshine his Father with a final flourish to cross out wide. It was at last proof that New Dock could do what they had been threatening all game. Throughout the match they put together some sweeping moves only for a last ditch tackle or a careless pass thwarting them. Mark Davies and Gareth Lee did score for the home team but it should have been so much more. Much of the credit should go to the Warriors back three with Randal again having a good match and was well supported by Liam Carpenter and Joshua Crowther who worked hard on the wings. Up front Darren Pollitt put in a lot of work which was rewarded with the Man of the Match award and generally the pack went well, rucking affectively and chasing hard. The Warriors 1st half points came through a Simon Jenkins try which he converted himself, a fine break away from scrum half Cornel and a Jon Kerr penalty.
The introduction of Lee Williams, veteran warhorse Gary James and prop Richard Evans helped the Warriors up the momentum in the second half while Lee Diane picked up his game. Jon Kerr got a Captains effort when he powered over but with Dock still able to attack from deep the game was evenly poised. Defences tightened up but Dock Captain Nima Samari matched Kerr’s effort to bring the scores level, another missed kick meant they couldn’t get ahead.
The Warriors had already ridden their lick pretty hard to restrict Dock to 4 tries but got a late present when super sub Neil Parker harassed the home team into a series of mistakes that saw the ball bobble over the line and the replacement wing plummeted to claim what turned out to be the winning score.
So the Warriors managed to claim the match and the Dai Spriggs Cup. There’s no doubt that Dai himself would have approved of the performances and spirit of occasion although he would certainly have backed himself to do a better job of the kicking. It game was a fitting way to remember the full back and a fine addition to Llanelli’s sporting calendar.

On the slightly more consistent front, Jason Jenkins played his 100th game at hooker while John Horwood has now passed 140 matches for the Warriors.

Hendy 25 Llanelli Warriors 34 (Match 150)

The Warriors managed to win their 150th fixture, edging out Hendy in the clubs 1st encounter and scoring 6 tries in the process. Led out by veteran John Horwood - standing in for Jon Kerr while he 'mentally prepared himself' the Warriors continued their recent good form. Chapman and Chris Furnace (well he was wearing Furnace socks) made debuts while Keeney developed his skills enough to be asked to feature for llanelli in his next match. Chapman drew praise from Team Manager Lee Rowlands who was shocked that he managed two tackles. Dean himself said he enjoyed the experience and couldn't wait to play again!! Togh tackling Anthony Randell was at it again, probaly boosted by rumours that he had broken 8 ribs in Tumble while Jonny Kerr set a new club record for stroping. Block obviously enjoyed himself - claiming his try was 'the best 3 yards of my life' and apart from Killer's javalin throwing the Warriors left each other alone (unlike Hendy)

Match Report

The Llanelli Warriors were able to mark their 150th fixture with a victory on their 1st ever visit to Hendy Park.
Not having met before it seemed the clubs were making up for lost time in a frantic 1st quarter. Both sides went for all out attack and this resulted in 4 tries shared evenly. Anthony Randell got the Warriors off the mark followed by a short range effort from Jason Bennet but these scores were cancelled out by scrum half Martin Rees and flanker Carl Rees for the home side.
The game settled down somewhat before Hendy took the lead. Setteling better despite the experimental look to the team they scored two sweeping tries through forwards Aaron Rees and Mark Williams.

With Darren Pollitt and Andrew John doing well the Warriors retaliated through Simon Jenkins who scored a neat try off the back of a 5 meter scrum and improved it himself.
Trailing at the break the Warriors were obviously keen to resume and they got the 1st score early when scrum half Randell went over in the corner, Captain Jon Kerr converting to regain the lead. Hendy though redoubled efforts and Calfyn Evans scored out wide, but the missed conversion left them leading by just a point. The Warriors were able to utalise a strong bench with Dean Chapman and Tristan Treharne adding steel up front whilst Joshua Crowther looking threatening on the wing. As time slipped away from the Warriors it looked as though Hendy would secure the victory but with full time approaching, especially as they were on the attack. However disaster struck when Neil Parker seized on a dropped ball, hacking over the line and claiming the touch down.
With time for just one more play Hendy over egged the restart and the Warriors had a scrum on half way. No 8 Simon Jenkins capped an excellent performance with a 50m run through some decidedly relaxed defence to score with the last action of the game.
The first meeting was deemed a huge success by both sides back at the clubhouse were Rob Hughes was named Man of the Match and it is hoped there will be many more meetings between the clubs in the future.

The Warriors had a great day at Tumble - won the game, free beer, free kit and John Horwood singing, if only the fireworks Lewi kept trying to return to had taken him off into the night sky it would have been perfect, read on for the latest Warriors adventures...

Match report

The Warriors began the month with a sparkling display at Tumble with almost as many fireworks on the field as in the display afterwards.
The teams shared 10 tries in an attractive matched well refereed by Wales' forwards coach Robin McBryde. The Warriors welcomed back a number of players for their 1st start of the season and it showed as they settled quickly. Centre Mathew Jones showed some early touches but bombed a couple of tries trough poor decision making and lack of football skills with the line at his mercy. Eventually his co centre Alun Stephens got the score board moving when he followed a neat chip through.
Wing Neil Parker rounded off a move to put the visitors further ahead but it wasn't long before Tumble came back, Richard Jones claiming their opening score after some good approach work from Chris Lloyd and Gareth Cavil.
The teams where evenly matched in most areas, Horwood, Thomas (Warriors) and Andrews and Rumblow (Tumble) enjoying a aerial battle at the line outs. The Warriors had the edge at the scrums though where man of the Match Huw Jenkins was always the centre of attention.
The Second half saw Tumble strike back with tries from Nolan, Flint and Endaf Jones. They might have created the momentum to win the game had it not been for some big hits from full back Anthony Randall. Tumble emptied their bench, the likes of Rhydian Row and Rhys Lewis making good contributions whilst the Warriors brought on vetran Huw Daniels for his club debut.
Tumble's lack of place kicking came back to haunt them when the Warriors finnished strongly, Martin Smith showed good pace in scroing to tries, either side of a Jonathan Jones effort which went some way to attoning for some erratic distribution earlier in the game. With Tony Whittaker adding a conversion to an earlier Jon Kerr effort the Warriors were able to sneak home, although they still needed a last ditch tackle from Randall to make sure of the scalp.
The match was follwed by an impressive firework display during which £100 was rasied for the Warriors team who hope to travel to Scotland later in the season.

The return of a number of old favorites; Colin Talcon, Mathew Billo, Tony Wheredyatakeher, Dai Posh, Roger Murphy plus a couple of debuts (Tank and Daniels) helped the Warriors to victory despite the absence of several managment figures (Deano, Chrisp, Gwilym).

With the author again not present a certain amount of guess work has gone into the match and apre match reports. There was much conflicting evidence: Did Jonny Kerr have a pout; Yes loads (Lee R), only one (Jon Kerr), that lasted all match (Lee R), he was in a mega one (Billo), oh Bloody hell (Neil Parker). Neil Parker's running; he was treading water (Lee R), I decided to give Martin a try, I was in the clear (Neil), Ha ha ha (Billo), I had a bad knee (Neil). Sometines the evidence was contary even from the same person, did anyone sing? No - John Horwood (Roger Thomas), was it a hard match? No ot really, they were too rough (Dai Ed). Everyone agreed it was a great day, that the fireworks were good, that it was a good match and that Anthony Randall can tackle.
Robin McBryde endeared himself to the Warriors cause (despite his tight reffing) by bringing along some kit with the result that at a quick glance the Warriors now look as though the feature a number of Wales and Scarlets players. he also managed to help man of the match Huw 'next time' Jenkins to get to grips with the srumaging & asked Cross and Randell why they weren't laying for the Scarlets academy).
It wasn't all good though with a convey of cars and a 'shed of a bus ((c) John Horwood)' ferrying the players about, Block breaking a nose and a rib (possibly) and Parker getting hurt (to go with his hangover) after getting into a ruck (for once).

Llanelli Warriors 22 Duke of Wellington 17 (Match 148)

Lee 'Mole' Rowlands wrote the report so it may not be up to the usual standard but shouldn't complain as he also reffed the game.

Match report

A strong Warriors team took to the field looking to blow away the cobwebs from Swansea Uplands 2 weeks ago, uncharacteristically for the Warriors they were first to settle and good work from Neil Parker and Andrew John set up Jonathan Jones for the first Warriors score out wide. Both teams settled well and possession was shared between the two teams before Dean Roberts found the room to go over for a score converted by Tony Richards.
The Duke used the muscle of Lee Williams, Justin Hughes and Tony Richards to complement the guile of Lee Diana, Dean Roberts and Josh, it was the latter that looked to have worked himself clear and crossed the try-line before Anthony Randall got back to put in a try saving tackle and hold the ball up over the line on the stroke of half time.
The second half began much the same as the first with the Warriors’ backs putting Anthony over early in the second half; the score was quickly matched by Josh crossing for the Duke. A combination of strong running and weak tackling put Rob Hughes under the posts for his first score for the Warriors.
A period of mistakes from both side marred what had been a good game and it was an advantage from a Duke knock on that led to Jonathan Jones picking up on the half way line before twisting and turning his way over.
The Duke found themselves 10 points down and rallied with 10 minutes left in the game, strong counter attack running from Duke full back 63 year old Steve Swearer set up a sustained period of pressure and only last ditch tackles from Neil Parker and Richard Evans on one flank and Andrew John on the other preventing certain scores. The Duke’s efforts were finally rewarded with a score by Darren. From the restart the Warriors were again put under pressure, with the try line at their mercy a mistake by the Duke gave the Warriors a scrum and the opportunity to put the ball out and signal the end of the game.

It should be noted that the Warriors lent the Duke a few players including Lee Picton Diana but to be fair they also lent them some decent ones like Dean Roberts as well.

Swansea Gladiators 19 Llanelli Warriors 5 (Match 147)

Firstly congratulations to Jonatan 'Killer' Kerr who was voted Captain for the season ahead of team mates Joshua Crowther, Richard Evans and Simon Jenkins. Jonny did a great job and for once had less strops than most of the team.

Disapointing result for the Warriors - especially as we dominated most of the game - just didn't quite have the guile to score. A good proper game of rugby though with plenty of knocks - Lee and Andrew John taking heavy hits that left them struggling, Big AL and CriSp geting stingers, Juice taking a blow to the balls (what are the chances!), Simon Tarw needing the usual 4 magic sponges while poor Alan Taylor got something in his eye.

After the match Big Al got his birthday celebrated in the usual way, Taylor won the raffle but almost lost his way home and Dai Newsance proved he is still tops for scoff, showing even Huw Bywd the way with 4 helpings of Curry n Chips.

Match report

The Llanelli Warriors started their season against their oldest rivals the Swansea Gladiators as they battled for the Dai Spriggs Memorial Shield.
The 14 year old fixture has never needed a trophy to make it a highly competitive match and this was no difference with the referee needing to be at his best to control some heated exchanges.
The early season rustiness showed in the Warriors start as the Gladiators stormed into an early three try lead. Showing a strong presence from host club Swansea Uplands they ran the Warriors ragged early on and it initially looked as though a record score was on the cards. Paul Scott showed up well to almost finish off a flowing move but the Llanelli team managed to hold firm.
Under new Captain Jonathan Kerr the Warriors slowly began to re-group and force their way up field. They forced a number of penalties (which in hindsight they might have attempted to kick), and spent the remainder of the half generally on the attack. They couldn’t quite make the break through however as Victor Raikar and Alex Brassielo lead the Swansea defence.
The Second half continued to see the Warriors in the ascendancy and pushing to the line. The Gladiators however always looked dangerous on the counter with Kristian Simon having an impressive match. Jason Cross had an impressive debut at full back for the Warriors and helped null this threat with some text book defence which later saw him named man of the match. Alan Stephens eventually managed the break through with a bullocking charge down the wing and the Warriors might have got further scores but Simon Jenkins and Alan Taylor were both guilty of moments of madness in otherwise fine performances.
Cool heads were needed and half backs Jon Jones and Gwilym Lewis began to steer the Warriors down a more direct route with Jason Bennett, Chris Spriggs and Richard Evans taking on the hard yards. It was a reversal of the usual pattern of this fixture – the Warriors rumbling slowly up field but the Gladiators looking for the quick strike. It was slow work and eventually the Warriors ran out of time, the referee blowing early as tempers continued to fray.Although disappointed with the result there were plenty of positives for the Warriors. Rob Hughes and Huw Jenkins showed up well on their debuts and most aspects of their performance were positive. On this occasion however they had to admit defeat and the Gladiators took proud possession of the Dai Spriggs Shield, at a time when disabled sports are in the headlines with the Paralympics, West Wales can be proud of these two teams who include players with learning difficulties for putting on a magnificent full bloodied rugby match.

Llanelli Warriors 34 Cambrian 22 (Match 146)

The final match of the season saw another Warriors victory. Unbeaten at home for the 2nd time in 3 seasons the Warriors only lost at Swansea University for a record of played 12, won 11, lost 1. The bright sunshine and hard grounds showed summer had arrived but opposing Directors of Rugby blamed each other for the Saturday kick off with Block reporting he had told Rowlands the Cam' would struggle for a team on that day whilst Lee maintained it was Blocks idea. The Cam certainly did have a lack of players but luckily the Warriors (via Mynydd y Garreg) had plenty.
Former Warriors, Mynydd and Furnace (and Betws) leg end 'Evil' Mike Esney (complete with personal supporter Justin Townsend)was first to volunteer to join the Cam ranks and with Dean Roberts having brought the Thomas twins Kerrie and Andrew down from the mountain for their Warriors debuts the Club were able to donate Lee Rowlands, James Duw Duw and a Carpenter. Jonathan Kerr had the distinction of playing against both Fathers when Phil Will was press ganged into joining John Kerr whilst various other Warriors swopped to appear for both sides. The highlights of all this were Phil's panic when passed the ball and 'two hairy cavemen who looked like they hadn't eaten for days came tearing at me'and Joshua going round Simon Tarw. There were also late apperances in the Cam ranks from Cotterall and some bloke in an e**land jersey.

MATCH REPORT

The Llanelli Warriors completed their season with victory over the Cambrian XV in their traditional curtain raiser to their Presentation evening. It completed their most successful season, unbeaten at home they lost just 1 of their 12 fixtures and were obviously determined to finish on a high. However with the Cambrian doubling as HQ for the Warriors there was plenty of familiarity and rivalry on the field making for two motivated teams.
For once the Warriors got off to a strong start, the hard conditions suiting their open brand of rugby. Half backs Gilasbey and Roberts soon showed the way they wanted to play and opened everything out. They gained early rewards when centre Alun Stephens crossed and another early attack saw Lee Barber squeeze into the corner.
Not surprisingly it took the Cambrian a bit longer to gel but strong running prop Simon Delaney charged over to get them into the match.
The strong running of Stephens (Warriors) and Delaney (Cambrian) was a feature of the game. Stephens was later named man of the match but Delaney had the satisfaction of outscoring his opponent 3 tries to 2. Others to stand out were the Carpenter brothers Liam and David while forward Darren Pollitt provided good line out ball and contributed in the loose. For Cambrian Joshua Crowther proved an elusive runner while Phil Williams maintained his usual standard.
A second try from Lee Barber plus one apiece for the Thomas brothers Kerie and Andrew put the Warriors firmly in command but Jason Bennett got one back for Cambrian and they had the final word when Delaney completed his hatrick.
It was no less than the Cambrian team deserved with the likes of John Kerr and Richard Evans giving their all. The Warriors though will have been delighted to end their season on a high note.

There was obviously a bit of rivalry between the sides with so many friends, relatives and former team mates involved but no one took it quite a seriously as Lee Rowlands who after a couple of cheap shots on Gwilym Lewis found he had to leave the field and eventually attend A&E. Comedy moments included Neil Parkers laconic refereeing style (when not on the phone), Mike Esney's tackling technique and Kerie Thomas' awesome interception try.
The most hotly contested award though was for 'biggest pwdi/strop' where Jon Kerr's simmering moaning for 80 minutes was matched by pout of the year from Captain Tony Whittaker.

Llanelli Warriors 29 Carmarthenshire county Council 25 (Match 145)

The Warriors edged another entertaining game at Stradey Park against a Carmarthenshire County Council XV. The Warriors efficent organisation meant that the kit was unwashed and stuck in Swansea with a couple of key players with CCC borrowing the spare. Luckily as combination of Chrisp getting some jerseys and various people digging out their own Welsh/Scarlets/Amman Utd jerseys meant the Warriors at least looked more or less like a team. Unfortuantley actually getting a team together was even more of a challenge with resources so stretched that Gwilym took on the no 10 jersey. Mind you he got so carries away with his 40m clearance kick that he had to be reminded that he should be in the pack when Dean Roberts arrivied. Thankfull a few old favorites managed to drag themselves along for this game with James Fotos, Lee Barber, Mike James and both Carpenter twins turning up.

The win was achived through a top team performance with Josh Crowther, Jon Kerr, Simon Jenkins, Liam Carpenter, David Carpenter, Chris Spriggs and Alun Stephens all having impressive matches (I think Al might have been refused a rebate on his council tax). John Horwood ruled the line out and allowed Jason Jenkins, Jason Bennet, Gwilym Lewis and Lee Barber to work their trickery at the front.

A decent crowd turned up to watch including various cowgirls which seemed to impress some of the Warrior team and hopefully helped raise some decent cash for Children in Need. Thanks to the Cambrian for putting on food afterwards.

For the second match running the Warriors extra accuracy at the posts proved the difference and earned them victory. This latest win over the Council side at Stradey Park saw them edge a 10 try thriller that could have gone either way.
The Warriors notorious slow start hampered the side again and the Council team camped in their 22 and despite a couple of reliving kicks from fly half Gwilym Lewis and some excellent defence all round the score was inevitable. The ball had been swung across the pitch several times as the visitors showed good skills and eventually the Warriors ran out of numbers for centre Craig Evans to break through. The pressure on the Warriors continued but the odd pass and some last ditch defence from the likes of Jon Kerr frustrated the Council side.
The Warriors eventually managed to work their way down field and after Jason Bennett and James Davies had gone close Tony Whittaker seized the initiative to cross for a captain’s try which Kerr improved.
The counter punches continued with both sides attacking at every opportunity. The Council’s most potent attacking weapon, full back Kevin Jones made one try before crossing himself while Warriors scrum half Lee Barber’s combative style earned him a try which Simon Jenkins converted.
A point behind at the half the Warriors were helped by the introduction of Dean Roberts at fly half, allowing Lewis to return to the pack and the introduction of Liam carpenter on the wing. Both scored fine tries with Carpenter’s perhaps the pick of the day. Some strong up front defending helped the Warriors cause with Joshua Crowther having his best game in red and Richard Evans throwing his weight about. The Council side though had a nice mix of bulk and pace and unlike in the 1st half became quite clinical once they did breach the line. Chris Moore and Daniel Rogers both showed their pace to get neat touchdown while Ceri Davies and Chris Moore helped open up the gaps. Council scrum half Daniel Rodgers looked to have put the game into the Council’s hands but a neatly worked move initiated by hooker Jason Jenkins saw Barber claim his second try and sealed victory for the Warriors who now look forward to meeting the Market Traiders on bank Holiday Sunday.

A beautiful day at Tumble (although the Bar B Q was cancelled after the morning rain) a good crowd watched this competetive game. Llanelli, Scarlets, Wales & Lions hooker Robin McBryde reffed the match - the que for Deano to be even more chopsy than usual then! and Tumble has enough players for refferee Jonathan Hardey to make his Warriors debut. He was joined in the 2nd half by Chris Morris and Derrick Lewis as Andrew and Bloc had colds (FFS!)

Apart from Hardy trying to fight and stamp on anyone he could the game was just the right sort of hard match.

Obviously a bit too hard for Gwilym Lulu who had to be taken back to Llanelli for 8 stiches but made it back in time to drive everyone home. Rich Hapus wasn't moaning too much though, getting a try when he replaced Gwil.

The Warriors would like to thank Tumble for another great fixture and the funds raised and look forward to the next match in the series next season.

Match Report

The Warriors managed to edge this exciting match at Parc Mawr. The coaches and parents of the junior section put together a strong XV under the guidance of captain Emyr Davies while the Warriors where able to name a settled team for what has become a popular encounter.
It was the Magpies who set the early pace scoring two early tries while the Warriors took their time to get going. The match was a physical encounter but under the guidance of Wales coach Robin McBryde it never got out of hand.
The Warriors hit back when No8 Simon Jenkins squeezed in at the corner and edged in front when Jon Kerr converted Andrew John’s interception try.
The tide edged back Tumbles way with another converted effort following a sweeping movement orchestrated by Emyr Enoch but John managed to get a second when he escaped down the left flank.
The 2nd half was no less exciting despite both teams losing players early through injury. Both sides scored another 3 tries with Gareth Cavill getting the pick of the home side’s efforts. Simon Jones and Dyfrig Thomas went well for the Tumble with dynamic displays but the Warriors were lucky that the likes of Whittaker and Howells were in form. Their tries came from Richard Evans, Simon Jenkins got a second and Man of the Match Jon Kerr sealed the win when he converted his own try – his kicking being the difference between the teams.
The large crowd knew they had witnessed a great game of rugby and both sides will be looking for a repeat next season.

MATCH REPORT

The Warriors managed to return to winning ways but it took all of their endeavour to overcome the competitive Duke of Wellington XV.
The Warriors welcomed back prop Dai Edwards, wing David Carpenter and No 8 Simon Jenkins whilst the Duke XV featured a range of ability from ex Llanelli players to veteran bar flies.
It was the Duke XV who made the early running though and they exploited some powder puff defence to score two early tries, much to the delight of the crowd.
With Andrew Rees running strongly in the centre and his son doing well on the wing the Warriors were struggling to get into the game.
Eventually bustling centre Martin Smith took matters into his own hands with a blockbusting run to the line. This injected new life into the Warriors side and prop Jason Bennett continued his recent run with another side stepping try near the posts.
If the Warriors thought they had calmed the storm they were mistaken as the Wellington hit back to ensure they were ahead at the break.
The game was highly competitive with Justin Hughes and Jon ‘Killer’ Kerr putting in some big hits for their respective sides. Richard Evans had an effective game at prop for the Wellington while Ashley did well for them in mid field. For the Warriors Chris Spriggs showed up well with some outrageous dummies and Alun Stephens ran with purpose throughout.
Smith again got the Warriors going when he made a try for Kerr but again the Wellington XV got ahead with their 4th try of the match. The Warriors haven’t lost at Stradey park for over 12 months and they redoubled efforts to secure the win. Live wire flanker Alan Taylor and flying wing James Howells did well to set up the position for Simon Jenkins to mark his come back with a try. With both sides having managed two conversions apiece the scores were deadlocked as the team entered the final quarter and there was no telling which way the result would go. In the end the Warriors needed a bit of luck, with a debate going on about how to take a penalty on the 22, Warriors fly half Jon Jones tapped and went – winding his way to the line and taking the Warriors to victory. Jenkins kicked the conversion and having finally got in front the Warriors managed to hold on a secure the win and keep their home record intact.

A sunny day at Stradey and a fine match against the Duke of Wellington (Pub) with only the slight hitch that Shed had to ref. The Duke XV included former Llanelli and sometime Warriors duo Big Lee Williams and Justin 'Bully' Hughes while the Warriros welcomed the non apperance of a very hung over Lee Rowlands.

It was another tight match but the Warriors managed to score most points and found a decent bit of mud to dump Richard in so it was all good.

Back at the Duke (once everyone had found it and parked) there was some top grub and the chance to watch Talcon on the pull, he was last seen giving his number to the bar maid and setteling into the corner of the bar....;)

Swansea University Freshers 24 Llanelli Warriors 20 (Match 143)

So despite James Tew using his weight on the wing, Bloc jinking about for his tries and Big Al making several breaks - sometimes with the ball, the Warriors 18 match unbeaten run, stretching back to a 0 - 7 loss to Dyfed Steel, to a time when Tony Blair was Prime Minister and petrol was less than £1 a litre, came to an end.

Considering it was the day after Wales secured a triple crown and e**land lost to Scotland it was a very quick match but then the Freshers XV are all younger than all but 2 of the Warriors (well, when Gwilyms not playing for them).
They were also able to keep the pace up because they had about 30 players this time instead of the 6 that turned up last time. Even Hoover turned up again (perhaps he’d heard Simon was injured) though Conan had “pulled a hamstring”.
Typically for the Warriors they were probably weaker for this 2nd visit with babysitting, trench digging and “Mam won’t let me play” among the excuses.

The Warriors should be pretty pleased with their performance despite the result. A number of players did well out of position and the whole team showed they could play. The forwards even eventually did some rucking whilst Gwilym was pleased with the chance to wish Jack a happy birthday during early exchanges. It was nice for the Warriors front row to actually face opponents about the same size but what James Tew made of having to face Tucker on the wing goodness knows.
Seren y Gem was shared between props Rich Hapus and Colin who both showed plenty of appetite with their excellent pick and drives.
It wasn’t all good though with Gwilym cross kick and big Al’s ‘nice break – wheres the ball’ emerging from a crowded field as skills of the day.
Those who made it to the Pub on the Pond for France v Italy were ‘treated’ to Whittaker’s speech, some crap rugby (same again next week please France) and the 1st match programme of the season (still available if anyone wants one).
Hopefully there will be a rematch later in the season back at Stradey to look forward to but until then we’ll just have to make do with a Grand Slam/Championship decider next weekend.

MATCH REPORT

After months and 18 matches the Warriors impressive unbeaten run finally came to an end in Swansea University.
The Warriors were missing some key players but the Students were good value for their win, their large squad having a distinctly experimental look about it.
With both sides committed to running rugby and excellent conditions the match was played at a hectic pace. It was the Warriors secured an early lead, flanker Gwilym Lewis put a big hit in on Swansea prop Jack Sirett and from the resulting pressure they won a penalty which Captain Tony Whittaker stepped up to bang over.
Swansea though, looked threatening from the off and swept up field at regular intervals.
Despite some good defensive work from Crowther and Howells on the wings the scores had an air of inevitability about them. They scored to tries through Dan Geare and Stephens both off flowing movements.
It looked as though the Warriors might be buried at this stage but Dean Gilasbey pushed the Warriors forward with some big box kicks which were well chased to force a foothold in University territory. Eventually number 8 Jason Bennett stepped through a tackle and forced his way over for a try Kerr improved. The momentum didn’t stay with the Warriors for long though and Aaron Lee streaked away for another student score before half time.
The University had the benefit of plenty of fresh legs and were able to introduce the likes of the fleet footed Joe Tucker on the wing and big George York up front.
The Warriors though kept plugging away. Andy Green proved a good value signing causing plenty of problems in mid field with co center Alan Stephens whilst up front Rich Evans carried on where fellow prop Colin Talcon had left off and they eventually shared the Man of the Match award.
The University extended their lead though when James Gregory managed to just beat the cover to go under the posts.
Again the Warriors needed to step up to stay in touch and some excellent off loading in the tackle and pick and drive. They made good progress up the field and it was that man Bennett who again drove over.
The University couldn’t capitalise on Ben West's pin point drop out and again the Warriors battered their way up field forcing a scrum 5. Scrum half Dexter Robinson was pressurised into a mistake and Gwilym Lewis pounced for a classic poachers score.
Both sides looked to land the killer blow in the final minutes and play flashed up and down the field but with the odd pass going astray and some determined defence neither side could add to their score.
The Warriors will be hoping to win the rematch later in the year whilst the next challenge for the Swansea Freshers is their varsity match against Cardiff at Llanrumney in April.

The 10th meeting between the sides saw one of the better matches in the series. With the Italy match distracting several Warriors it was only a bare XV that took the field but James Tew and Killer produced one of the best tries the club has produced and the boys who played generally stepped up to the mark. Nice to see Alan Taylor Captain Cefn and even nicer see him come off 2nd best to both Big Al and Gwilym Lulu and get yellow carded (nice one Charlie).

Joshua had another good match and Gwilym even managed to find Deano with the odd pass. The Bonar brothers all came out of retirment for the day and Nigel Mills managed to sneak on for a 2nd apperance when Billo went off (no Llandovery call up this year).

After match was as good as ever in spite or perhaps because, it had to be crammed in as the room had been booked. Before the sing song of course it was Wales v Italy and the cracking performance no doubt helped the atmosphere.
There was the usual raffle which rasied £500 with the Warriors also claiming several bottles and a t shirt. Then it was John Horwood and yellow submarine, Alan Taylor and She wore a yellow ribbon (I think), Jason & Chris on the haka etc etc, awesome!

After a couple of pints in a very packed bar it was bus home and only a hardy crew of Moley, Lulu and of course Lewi made it to the Greyhound to tell Dew Dew how we'd got on.

Roll on next season and the 10th anniversary!

Match report

The Llanelli Warriors racked up their biggest win of the season at Cefneithin on the weekend as they brought up their unbeaten run to 18 matches.
The match started as it continued, at a blistering pace and it was the Warriors who scorched into the lead with two excellent tries. Prop Darren Pollitt showed he had the mobility for the modern game to outpace his opposite number within almost a minute of the kick off. This was closely followed by a Captain’s try for Tony Whittaker with Jon Kerr’s conversion taking the Warriors into a strong early lead.
The home crowd might have been worried that a rout was on the cards but their team soon showed they were not just there to make up the numbers and rocked the Warriors with some dynamic attacks. The young back line would prove troublesome for the Warriors defence all day with the centres often cutting through. Wing Joshua performed miracles on the wing with some stunning defensive work but the try was bound to come.
It fell to Cefn Captain for the day Alan Taylor who had an effective game despite some tight marking. Unfortunately he let himself down getting involved in some fisticuffs with Warriors scrum Half Gwilym Lewis and was subsequently yellow carded. This handed the initiative back to the Warriors and they responded with the try of the game. James Howells was worked into a bit of space and he weaved his way up the wing to put the supporting Kerr under the posts, Whittaker converted and the Warriors were clear again.
They could have gone into half time with a decent lead but back came Cefneithin, good interplay working Nigel Mills over to keep the game evenly poised at the break.
After the flashy 1st half tries the Warriors showed they could also take the direct route with Alan Stephens bludgeoning his way through a number of tackles to extend the lead.
Needing to score next to stay in the game Cefn got a 7 pointer when Scott improved scrum half Marco’s darting try. The Warriors lost influential full back Mathew Jones whilst Cefn brought on impact player Dai Junior as the game entered the final quarter.
Again the home backs looked like scoring on several occasions, only for the last pass to go astray. The Warriors took advantage and finished the game strongly. The Bonar brothers Chris, Jon and Anthony initiated a number of strong driving mauls and one superb effort resulted in a long range try for Chris. Pollitt added a second try with another fine run and with the last move James Howells sealed the Man of the Match award with a scintillating run to the line – rounding off an impressive match, especially for the Warriors who will hope to take this form into their important clash with Swansea University.

Jumpin' John Horwood toasts another win

Nice to finally get a fixture in this year, and despite missing several players, nice to get a win. Perhaps the Betws team weren't too worried about the result but there were some good performances from the Warriors: Simon had some of his best moments on a rugby field with some great tackles and strong runs, Josh and Darren did well on the wings and Billo showed the Betws team he can play rugby after all.
Afterwards Jason 2 Guns was the top performer trying to convince Sally they were getting married and showing off his singing skills.

Darren Petticot was the hero for the Llanelli Warriors when they won this exciting encounter at Betws. His two tries was the difference between the sides and capped a fine performance.
With both clubs rekown for their running rugby it was no surprise to witness a quick match and the score could have been much higher, especially if Betws had taken several chances.
The Warriors featured two new players in Joshua and Nathan David, whilst the Betws XV saw a rare run out for club legend and former Captain Jonathan ‘Bullet’ Hughes.
Joshua in particular had a fine game in both attack and defence, impressing so much he was later named man of match.
The game itself was a pacy contest. The Warriors hadn’t played for a month whilst Betws fielded a mixture of first and second team players and so there were plenty of mistakes and not a lot of structure. Steve O’Neil’s excellent referring meant the game had plenty of flow and there was some fine skills involved from both sides. For Betws Richie Griffiths was at his mecurial best as he set of attack after attack whilst for the Warriors there was the contrast of Mathew Jones’ elusive running and Simon Jenkins directness. Up front Jason Jenkins led a confrontational front row effort.
Both sides scramble defence held for the first half and although Betws seemed to have the upper hand the Warriors looked constantly dangerous on the break. Eventually prop Alan Taylor provided the break through, following several short drives he managed to dummy his way over despite an excellent tackle from Nathan Davies.
Simon Jenkins managed the angled conversion and it was enough to keep the Warriors ahead when Nathan Jones struck back for Betws, rounding off a fine move but the conversion slipped wide.
The game continued to hang in the balance right until the final quarter. Gareth Underwood almost broke through for Betws and Cellan Davies also went close but the Warriors managed to hang on in. And so the stage was set for Pticots brace, first he finished off a nice handling movement and then, in the final minuted he set off on a weaving run that started near the half way and finished under the posts, giving Joshus an easy conversion, and the Warriors the glory.
As Betws 2nd team Captain, Warriors Player/Coach Gwilym Lewis (who himself had a fine game) was pleased for both teams at the final whistle.
“Its always a good game here in Betws, it’s part of a busy 6 nations which will climax with the visit of French side Ledre in a few weeks but today it just went the Warriors way. We are playing really well at the moment and the boys are putting what they do in training onto the pitch.”

A hectic but very enjoyable day at New Dock Stars (again). Played on boxing day as a memorial to Warriors/Dock Legend Dai Spriggs it is hoped it will become an annual event.
The match was another exciting affair with the score swinging back and fore. Eventually following a great team movment, John Horwood crossed at the death to produce a match winning try and continue the Warriors unbeaten run.

With a number of players missing Richard 'Hapus' Evans stood in as Captain of a rather experimental team with Tom Corcoran amongst those making their debut for the club. His cousin Gareth, playing just his 2nd match got two tries whilst the 'vocal' Simon 'Tarw' Jenkins was named Man of the Match.

Try of the game was that scored by Jonny 'Killer' Kerr who scored from 50m, skinning the opposition full back whilst Jason Jenkins had some good runs against his brother Gareth Curtis.

A good, if wet day at New Dock. Played before the Wales v South Africa match the Warriors managed to triumph a rather frantic and frenetic match in which 90 points were scored. There is a bit of editing to go on the report but heres the excluisive preview...

Match report

The Warriors edged this high scoring but scrappy affair by just 2 points to continue their unbeaten run.
The game was played in poor conditions with a constant drizzle having a detrimental effect on handling. This was a shame as both sides attempted to run the ball throughout the match. Whilst the game was scrappy there was plenty to keep spectators entertained and both sides crossed for good tries. Dock were 1st out of the blocks, their team had everything with an age range of 17 – 57 and they combined these elements to good effect.
The Warriors took a little while to get going but once Lee Rowlands had put them on the board the tries came thick and fast for both sides.For New Dock there were big performances from Baxter and former Swansea no 8 Dai Hunter and their tries came from Scott Hanford with two, Jones, Morgan, Adrians, Richards, Matthews and Hanford. Luke Edwards capped a fine game with 3 conversions. The Warriors managed to edge it though, Darren Pollitt and Roger Thomas did well defensively whilst their scores came from Captain Tony Whittaker (2 tries and two conversions), Jon Kerr (2 tries and a conversion), Gwilym Lewis, Alan Stephens and Dai Edward who rounded off a superb move next to the posts.
Played in an excellent spirit there were plenty of individuals who did well referee Dennis Davey chose Jason Jenkins as man of the match and both sides will be looking forward to the rematch on boxing day.

It was a good day for the Warriors; New Dock contigent with Jason, Juice and Chrisp all enjoying the match, (shame Simon Jenkins didn't turn up). Rich Hapus, Colin Talcon, Lee Rowlands and Juice each shared a half for New Dock.

Darren Petticoat managed to complete an excellent tackle and Bloc deserves a mention for his stroming runs and piggy back rides. Try of the day though was definatley Dai Ed who showed what good support play is and crossed near the posts. Lee Barabra and Gwilym Lulu seemed to form a good understanding at the base of the scrum and they will look forward to continuing this next time they play together (2010).
In the bar afterwards Jason was named man of the match whilst, despite impending fatherhood Gwilym was one of the last to leave as the team flitted away into the night. The rematch is set for Boxing day.

Match report

The Llanelli Warriors continued their impressive start to the season and have now extended their unbeaten run from last season to 14 matches. The latest triumph was perhaps one of the sweetest as they claimed the Dai Spriggs Memorial Shield from their old rivals the Swansea Gladiators.
As ever it was a close match between two evenly matched teams. Both sides defended bravely and it was obvious from the early stages that opportunities would need to be taken.
The Gladiators produced much of the early pressure but with the likes of dai Edwards and Richard Evans tackling anything that moved, the Warriors line held firm.
Although their forays into the opposition 22 were rarer the warriors made the most of it when Dean Gilasbey crossed following good approach work from Simon Jenkins. Captain Tony Whittaker smartly banged over the conversion for a 7-0 lead that lasted into the second half.
The Gladiators hit back with a sweeping move up the right flank, for once the Warriors tackling was fund wanting but fortunately the wide angle proved too difficult for the conversion.
New blood such as Martin Smith and the Carpenter twins Liam and David had a positive effect on the Warriors performance but it was another old stager, Alan Stephens, to power over and extend the Warriors lead.
Again this was somewhat against the run of play and the Gladiators, dominating the line outs and aided by Warrior indiscipline, soon pushed back up field. Pushing for the score that might have brought them level it was a nervous time for the Warriors. However, when it seemed the Gladiators pressure was likely to pay off scrum half Gilasbey again found a gap and somehow managed to avoid tacklers as he scampered the length of the field. Jon Kerr hammered in the final nail with the conversion which made the game safe.
Both sides should be proud of their performances in this exciting game which kept the crowd entertained with plenty of skill and commitment shown throughout.

14 matches unbeaten, thank goodness Deano managed to get back from Swansea! (even if James Dew wanted his try to be described as 'fell over from a yard'). A couple more useful debuts and another fine performance from the Carpenter twins. Also seen getting stuck in were Dai Ed, Rich Hapus, Jumpin' John and Crisp. If only 'too late' Tony would follow their example we might have nilled the opposition.

To be fair the game was played in a good spirit on the field and the Warriors did well to win. It was lucky everyone got on as the after match stuff in the Cambrian certainly saw everyone going toe to toe in the bar although the only contest was to try and get some food.

Match number two of the season on the day Wales played Canada in the World Cup. Much better organised than last season although the teams did have to wait for Tumble U16s to play Baglan.
The game was (as last year) well natured, fast and entertaining. Both sdies enjoyed and once wales got their act together it was a happy Tumble Clubhouse.
Tony Whittaker was voted Capatin ahead of quality nominations Meredith Pugh and Jonathan Kerr. He did a fine job, playing well and encouraing those around him.
Debutants Liam, David and Rhidian all did well and with a number of regulars missing certainly took their chance. It all bodes well for the visit of the Gladiators next Sunday.
Thanks as ever to all at Tumble, especially the ladies who made food and John Smart who organised the raffle raising £50 for the Warriors cause.

Match Report

The Warriors maintained their good start to the season by edging out Tumble in the exciting but good natured encounter. Tony Whittaker took over the Captaincy and did well personally and in inspiring those around him. Both sides looked to attack from the off and it was a while before the Warriors broke the deadlock through Jon Jones following several phases.

Early season nerves and unfamiliarity plauged both sides at crucial times but the players contiuned to be adventurous with long passages of play keeping the good crowd entertained.

Tumble's ambition soon paid off and Rhydian Rowe sped away for an equalising score.

The game contiuned end to end as two even matched teams looked for an advantage. Emyr Davies led from the front for Tumble with an energetic performance whilst Huw daniels used his considerable experience to direct attacks. For the Warriors Richard Evans and Stuart Taylor were impressive and Liam Carpenter had a great debut on the wing.

Tumble got the next score in game that was obviously going to be tight with Richard Davies finishing off some fine interplay.

The Warriors soon hit back though when Andrew John snatched a trade mark interception. Both sides continued to have chances and it was Tumble who went into the half ahead as Derek Lloyd got their 3rd try.

Despite the humid conditions there was no discernable drop in the tempo as the teams went into the 2nd half. David Carpenter continued his brothers good work whilst Meredith Pugh was eventually named man of the match for a typically gutsy performance. They got an equalising score through Jon Kerr after a break from Rhydian Jones and Whittaker slotted the crucial conversion. Jon Jones got his second to put the Warriors further ahead with kerr this time adding the extras but the game was far from over.

Tumble redoubled their efforts and pounded the Warriors line for the final quater of the match with last ditch tackles and slight mistakes keeping them at bay. It was a nervy ending for the Warriors but they clung on for a victory that now sees them unbeateb for a club record 13 games and in good stead for the Gladiators visit to Stradey park next week.

The llanelli Warriors managed a narrow victory in this prestigious fixture.

Played alongside the Scarlets v Bath match a good crowd stayed to watch the Warriors as they managed a rare opening fixture success.

The Llanelli Warriors triumphed in this memorable fixture against a Select XV put together by former llanelli player Lee Williams in memory of thier former full back Dai Spriggs who passed away last summer.

The Select XV, appropriatley featured Dai's 'other' club New Dock Stars strongly and also featured players from Pontyberem, Cambrian, Mynydd y Garreg and the Warriors whilst the Warriors welcomed back legendary No8 Dai Newson, out of retirment for this special occasion.

It was the Select XV who started strongest though. They gelled faster than the Warriors and got two ealry tries through Andrew Dock and Jamie Seven. Martin Smith gave them solidity in the center and Phil Williams provided hard yards up front.

The pace of the game affected the Warriors with Richard Evans and Colin Talcon feeling the pace but James Howelles and debutant Pontins did well in their place. Veteran John Horwood ensured the Warriors had decent ball to work off from line outs and center Neil Parker got them points on the board with a well taken try.

The match remained close throughout. Prop Justin Lloyd and Ioan Roberts showed their skills for the select XV who scored again through diminutive center Speedicut and Gary Wing. The Warriors were indebted to thier kickers. Whittaker slotted one excellent conversion whilst Simon jenkins bagged two but was left to rue a missed opportunity for a try when instead of trusting to his power he tried to chip the last line of defence and failed. The Warriors scored a popular try when Chris Bonar drove over from a line out whilst Jon Kerr scored a spectacular effort at the start of the second half, snatching the kick out and beating his father for pace to the line.

The Select XV lost some momentum when Paul Herbert was replaced by Matthew Jones. Jones may have wished he hadn't bothered as he was closley marked and took big hits from Roberts, Rowlands and Parker for his troubles.

James Dew kept up his remarkable try scoring record for the Warriors to put them into a healthy lead but the game entered a frantic final stage when , after several spurned chances, Adams finally scored for the Select. The missed conversion left the Warriors hanging on to a 2 point lead and so hectic were the last few minutes that it sometimes appeared to be 20 a side. The Select pushed for the winning score but it wasn't to come and so the Warriors had managed a rare winning start to the season.

The game, played in a friendly yet very competetive manner was a fitting tribute to David Spriggs who no doubt would have relished the fact that the Warriors needed accurate kicking to ensure their victory. The Warriors would like to thank all those who helped them remeber their former team mate. the players and officials who turned out and the Scarlets for their support and finally Dai's family whose seal of approval made everybodys' efforts worthwhile.

Good to see such a good turn out for this important fixture as not only did it pay tribute to dai but also bodes well for the coming season. This was the Warriors 12th fixture without defeat, equalling the previous record. Rowlands highlighted many aspects of the game; His big tackle on Billo, Sheep's big tackle on Billo, his big tackle on Billo, Parker's big tackle on Billo and of course his big tackle on Billo. Simon will be held to account, not only for trying to chip John Kerr with the line at his mercy but also arranging half the team to 'cover back' whilst the other half were left to get on with it up front - open side flanker my arse!

Nice to see Duw Duw get another try, but even nicer if he learnt to pass abd finally spare a thought for John Kerr who as you read this is no doubt having his son re live, in glorious technicolour detail, how he was skinned for a crucial try.

Match report

The Warriors wound up their season with an impressive victory against the Cambrian XV at Stradey Park. After their traditional slow start to the season the Warriors took off and this match took their unbeaten run to 10 matches.
The bright weather helped their cause no end and were soon showing the sort of style which has brought them success this season.
Phil Williams marked an overdue return to the side with a very early try which gave the side confidence and allowed them to relax. Both sides looked to move the ball around whenever possible and an enthralling match with plenty of skill on show soon developed.
Any ideas that the Warriors had that this would be a stroll in the park were quickly dispelled by the Cambrian pack. With Jason Bennett and Wayne Jones leading from the front row, the back row of Mat Kirkham, Stu Jones and Dominic Reynolds were a dominate force throughout the match. The Warriors were lucky to go further ahead through Richard Pegler (improved by Jon Kerr) and both sides worked hard to find any openings.
The Cambrian hit back through Ryan Williams after some fine inter-handling stretched the Warriors defence. Two quick-fire tries from Richard Pegler though put the Warriors clear again as the half time whistle approached. James Dew also went close in a purple patch for the home team but the likes of Craig Edwards and John Kerr kept the Cambrian positive and the Warriors were flattered by their half time score.
The start of the second half saw the Cambrian step up their efforts with scrum half Wayne Phillips bagging a try and conversion. The Warriors were thankful that a number of players stepped up to the mark with Meredith Pugh, Richard Evans, Jon Kerr, Simon Jenkins and Man of the Match Tony Whittaker putting into practise what they had learned over the season. Both teams were able to bring in quality players from the bench, Warriors Mathew Jones and David Edwards equalling out the contributions of Chris Davies and Luke Pawello. The other Cambrian sub Laurence Reynolds though, got them a crucial score.
The match back in the balance the Warriors had to dig deep if they were to maintain their record and they did so. Jon Jones got one try and then Richard Pegler finished off a sweeping move to equal the club record with his 4th touch down. Simon Jenkins slotted his third conversion to complete the scoring and the season for the Warriors on a very high note.
Jason Jenkins led his team off the field with one of the most impressive seasons to date for the club who continue to prove that having a learning difficulty is no barriers to playing rugby.

A good match with all those mentioned deserving their name checks (on the Warriors side anyway). Tony had a busy game at full back but it was a shame he couldn't have landed a kick to go with his attack and defence performances. Rich Pegler looked slightly bewildered when subbed shortly after his 4th try but he had already claimed a share of the club record. fair play to the Cambrian who had to put up with not one but 3 crap refferees (Chrisp/Funky/Duw Duw) but at least they didn't have to put up with the sunlounger based mocking of Lee The Mole.

Llanelli Warriors 8 Swansea Gladiators 5 (Match 134)

Match report

The Warriors managed to scrape a win against their biggest rivals and oldest opponents, the Swansea Gladiators. It was sweet revenge for one of just two loses they have suffered this term but took them a lot of hard work to secure.
This was the 19th game between the two teams and as closely fought as any of them. The teams were very evenly matched and the awful weather was even more of a leveller. Consequently much of the game was played between the two 22s and both sides found it hard to gain any momentum.
With two tough defences and lots of handling errors both sides got frustrated. After a bright start the Warriors started to find themselves trapped in their own half and it was no surprise when the Gladiators backs managed to carve an opening and score a fine try.
The score didn’t lead to the game opening out and with the rain hammering down it was difficult for either team to make much headway.
The stalemate lasted into the second half, the Gladiators dominated the lineout with dynamic hooker Adrian Williams showing up strongly but the Warriors made ground through the likes of Richard Evans and Alan Taylor.
The Warriors laid siege to the Gladiators line and finally got some reward for their efforts when Tony Whittaker banged over a penalty, a crucial decision from Captain Jason Jenkins going against many of his team mates who felt a try was a matter of time.
It looked like he might have been mistaken as the minutes started to slip away and it must have been into injury time before the Warriors breakthrough came. With another move seemingly snuffed out and most of the Warriors backline committed to the ruck, good hands in midfield from Lewis and Gilasbey gave prop James Dew a half chance. A twinkle toed side step allowed him room to move and he scampered over in the corner for what proved to be the winning score.
With a number of injuries having occurred there was still time for the Gladiators to go for the win but the Warriors held firm to ensure the victory.
Both teams had put everything into a tight contest and Warriors prop Jason Bennett was later named man of the match.
